Why do you think I’ll end up with a tube down my throat. Do you say that to everyone who smokes, or to everyone who is overweight ? Keep things in perspective ffs.

No you Pratt. There are 15 million people with underlying health conditions in the UK. An awful lot of these are not lifestyle related including autoimmune conditions, immunodeficiency, genetic conditions like cystic fibrosis and those with unseen disability that prevent them protecting themselves fully. Over 5 million people have asthma (including me and have never smoked), 1 million moderate asthma and over 200,000 severe asthma. Who are you, or anyone else, to judge their lives and what they contribute to society.

Why do you feel you can pronounce over others health?

I am not saying you will end up intubated. But you could, or someone you care about. It's not 'just flu" get that. Get that mortality is 4-10 times greater than flu. Get that we don't even know longer term effects and sequelae-these clearly a range from reproductive to neurological issues including massive increase of risk of stroke. Its too early to fully know. That's why I prefer caution.

Wasting your time conversing with him, he is this sites equivalent of A Fans Dad, from the other site.

Ignore him.

AfD may be mad, but he is at least a decent person.

Are you seriously saying that lifestyle doesn’t play a part in autoimmune diseases ?

As for your asthma, lots of scientists believe it may be caused be vitamin deficiency.

Really? Most think they are genetic, related to prior infections and increasingly with microbiome. But then what would I know? I forgot expertise is related to google searches. There are exceptions like T2 diabetes, but vitamins. Reading knobheads like Ivor Cummins not doubt

You seem a very angry man. Have you got any videos on YouTube ? You also seem not to be a very good professor.

How do you know? What is a good professor? Unlike those on YouTube I am a real Professor, in a Russell Group University . Superstar Professor- no, just a mediocre jobbing one with a smallish research group of five. A bit niche but with a good international profile. Work with industry, several big international projects.
No, I am not an angry person, just as many infectious disease scientists are, increasingly exasperated by lies and disinformation that is costing lives.

Lots of things cost lives, normally people don’t care.

And there are many scientists who disagree with what they say.

Prof,

For what it’s worth, I think you’re very balanced, informative poster who is always willing to offer an insightful perspective on things and for that I am grateful. Your efforts to educate and enlighten do not always fall on barren ground.

I don't mean this in a bad way or trying to be funny, but some of the people who you say are spreading disinformation and lies, have similar credentials to yourself, or a lot more..

For me these people who oppose what has been reported by the bbc and what the government say, make me a feel a lot better, I still don't put people at risk, I wear a mask and so on.

I would say, don't blame it all on all the deniers, I bet the majority are more sensible than the ones who clapped for the nhs, or put on their Facebook profile pic stay the Fu** home. They may talk a good game, but that's about it.

Thanks for this post. I think you've brilliantly identified exactly why so many people like to get their 'news' from Youtube and the like. Not because the mainstream media are lying, but because you don't like what you're hearing. It makes you scared, upset or angry and you look for someone who says what you want to hear to make you feel better. Understandable, but it's possibly one of the biggest dangers to the world today.

But what you don’t see, unless on the inside, is these views are an extreme minority and the vast majority of scientists are extremely pissed off with charlatans like Sikora, Cummins and Yeadon who seem convincing,
Speak well but know FA about infectious disease and in each case have ulterior motives to make money. Henneghan and Gupta are a disgrace, taking right-wing lobby group money and PR. Henneghan has limited expertise in infection. Essentially he is a primary care specialist/GP with some expertise in evidence-based medicine around cardiology. Gupta has been proven, like Tegnell the Swedish state epidemiologist,to have got things badly wrong. Mainly around a lack of understanding of immunology. Although they raised an interesting approach, the whole idea of herd immunity through natural infection was considered extreme but bit Boris and Dom enough to have cost perhaps 25,000 lives. Anyway, we are still nowhere near herd immunity.

I am far from an expert in coronaviruses, but know more than most.
Have examined PhDs on them and written enough in book chapters and taught about them for two decades to know shit from chocolate. In fact you could easily criticise the BBC for giving a platform to these self-proclaimed experts. I wouldn’t appear on media as an expert unless I knew enough to be sure I was not spreading crap. Sadly, liars and charlatans have had a platform for the last nine months. When I say a majority,
I mean about 90%

Good post. The need of the BBC to give equal air time to bloody idiots so that they can be seen to be „objective“ is a disgrace. So is their relentless promotion of women’s professional football but that’s less serious.

I will add that in my upvote i don't disagree with the promotion of womens football. Do I watch it, no as what i've seen does not (yet) interest me but i am happy to accept that it does for many others and that is a remit of the BBC so therefore i support it.

Quite why they give Sikora any time is beyond me. His cancer record (his supposed specialism) with the Lockerbie bomber says a lot. He knows fuck all about infectious disease.
