Daytime drinking in Swansea

I'm meeting an old friend tomorrow. It's his first visit. I'm not well-versed on Swansea's pubs so I've shortlisted a few for a 4 hour Saturday afternoon crawl but would appreciate anyone's input. We are gents of a certain age so it'll be more about comfortable surroundings and good beer than two-for-one cocktails and hen do's.

We are meeting at the train station.

* Copper
* Brewdog
* Riverhouse / Bar Americanos
* BeerRiff
* Pump House
* No Sign

There's four there I've never been in.
Any banana skins on that list? Any glaring omissions?

Imo, the Pump House is decidedly average and unremarkable. If you are in the marina area and the weather is clear, why not take your friend up the Meridian Tower to the Grape and Olive? The view is amazing and an impressive intro to Swansea if your friend is new to the area. Beer is no more expensive there.

I’ve been told that it’s really expensive in the Tower. If the beer is reasonable where do they get you? On their food maybe?

Try the sub aqua yacht club which is between the pump house and SA1 pedestrian bridge by Sainsbury's

Pick up a load of cans, amble over to Castle Square and drink them whilst leering at young women. I heartily recommend it.

Don't forget the Queens buddy, still my favourite in Swansea. The Swig also and as mentioned above, the Yacht Club. Raj in the Schooner runs an ok place, he's opened up an outside area behind the pub itself but not sure what that is about.

@airedale, the food buddy...it's expensive pub grub which is very hit and miss.

That's a good shout re: both G&O and yacht club. Brilliant stuff.

Edit: I had considered The Queens but last time I went on a Saturday afternoon it didn't rock my world, lots of cooking smells too. Maybe if we have time.

I've been up there several times over the last few months. I live in the south east and I always look forward to a pint up there when I'm back. It's never busy in the upper bar area. Granted I'm used to London prices but I don't recall thinking a pint was hugely more expensive than anywhere else.

Nevertheless, I go for the view and on a clear summers evening that view is glorious all around. I figured if I was showing a mate round, that's the first place I'd head.

Queens is a proper pub granted, but I often feel there's an edge there.

I've not eaten up there for ages, but the place is owned by the same firm as the Pump House and from memory the menus are very similar.

I always think "why isn't this place busier?" - I just don't get it.

Mrs lego and I say the same thing when we walk round the marina. Used to be the Pump House and the Tugboat and Turbot and on a Friday and Saturday night you couldn't get through the door. Actually, most pubs were like that and that was the way to socialise in those days (80s)

Swansea was amazing in the 80/90s(70s too from what I've been told) I had lads from Scotland, Newcastle, Midlands, all over Wales coming down even just for one night...but my daughter can't wait to move away from here I'm glad I grew up in the era I did.
