Martin takes swipe at Bennett and Burns – with no defensive cover on bench

If we’ve no defenders on the bench that ultimately comes down to him. No ifs, no buts. He has to work with what he has, even if he thinks they don’t meet his standards. He can’t hang players out to dry who he’s excluded.

The only thing he’s got right here is understanding that we got done when Flynn filled in. They were targeting him, that was bleedin obvious from 80 yards away.

We were second best anyway. Two poor teams, one wanted it a bit more and were a bit more lively.

Agree, it's a team game and you need the right balance in the starting eleven as well on the bench.

Watching the goal back, it had less to do with Downes and much more to do with Naughton and Manning ambling back with no interest in picking up Gray, Manning especially.

It was almost like a comical attempt at an offside trap. But we don't really play offside. And none of the players called for it either.

And in this instance, there needs to be more flexibility to move away from the formation if such an injury occurs. Not slot square pegs in round holes.

As for bench strength, QPR only named 5 subs and 2 of them were keepers ffs!

Generous to Downes I feel. The fact he apologised to teammates afterwards told the story that he went to sleep. Saying that, he was playing a position he shouldn't be playing.

We really do need some centre halves this summer though. But then we did last January and it wasn't deemed an area to focus upon.

Wasn't the last time we signed a centre half permanently Mike van der Hoorn? Or Alfie Mawson?

Six years ago? Or am I missing something.

Edit forgot Ryan Bennett, just one then

Bennett I get, Burns and Ogbeta leaves me scratching my head. Not for the first time I’m at the point of thinking that Martin is too stubborn for his own good. This isn’t a good trait for a guy at this stage of his managerial career.

He needs to get a grip, he's achieved fukall so far and isn't likely to the way he's going, his arrogance and ego is gonna cost us and him, fukhim anyway its us I'm concerned about.

Bang on. A good manager would mix it. His game management is absolute shyte. Stubborn b-gger.

He’s used up all his goodwill by making so little progress since the Cardiff and Millwall wins and continually repeating a failing method and formation since, I think that’s a huge mistake. It’s left everyone with a really bad negative feeling about things and that will carry over to next season. That means he will run out of road very quickly. I would have been putting everything into finishing on a high last week and this week if it had been me. I would certainly have been trying something different to tighten up after Reading and Muff, not the same soft shite.

I can’t really see how it gets better if “the process” remains the same.

He's inexperienced, naive, holds grudges and doesn't play players he's actually signed, he also plays everyone everywhere and complains a lot

He's deluded on fantasy Island with his process he keeps bleating on about to the fans like we should all bow down and see through, it's one thing, the fans, but the Americans won't fall for his bullshit

Downes, is he really all that?, seems like a headless Chicken on times for me, with occasional decent moments, Grimes needs to go to see the best of him I feel, Grimes is decent enough in what he does, but its not enough and a Captain he's not, on match days at least.

I like Downes, think he'll get to the top but he has major holes in his game. I don't think he's ready for the big time yet. Some of the comments regarding him are a bit bizarre at times.

As for Grimes, I'm not sure. He's the sort that thrives around good players but I can't see a PL team coming in for him. There's just not enough end product.

Downes and Grimes are too similar. Downes used to be a bit more barnstorming but lately he's slipped into doing the same things as Grimes does. We either need to use just the one of them or actually work on getting them doing different things.

Our midfield shape actually looked better yesterday when Smith came on. He sat deep and Grimes pushed a bit further forward.

Downes needs to take far more responsibility than he has been. The difference in that regard when Fulton played was very noticeable.

I don't think they're too alike though. I don't think Downes has been helped by being messed around with in terms with being asked to play in defence (which he's not very good at).
