Grimes is far more impactful a player when he isn't dropping in between the centre halves as a third defender, even more so when not playing with Fulton who never gives him an out ball option in that situation.

It is difficult to truly judge him since he has made that holding midfielder position his own and hasn't had any meaningful competition for his position in the last five or six years.

What you cannot fault with him is his fitness levels, not only does he rarely ever miss a game but he is also very rarely if ever subbed off due to fatigue and if so usually only ever for tactical reasons.

Always makes himself available for the pass - would just like him to be more creative when he’s not under any direct threat. Turn and look for the forward pass. Just to let you know Grimesy - if you should ever read this - my vision from the sofa is bloody brilliant.

Your reminder that the criteria for a "progressive pass" is a pass 10 yards or longer, and moves the ball from one quarter of the pitch to another.

So, say you've got a player who enjoys dropping himself in between his centre backs on the edge of his own area, and then passes into midfield just short of the halfway line. "Progressing" the ball, sure, but not impacting the game in any real way.

You know, that type of thing.

Been a big critic of his. The criticism is more frustration. There’s a decent player in there. It’s like the shackles have been let off him by Luke, which is a credit to the manager.
What has also helped is Cabango and Dalling are now both much better at starting attacks allowing Grimes to not come so far deep to receive the ball. Again, credit must go to Williams in improving this aspect of the centre backs game, allowing Grimes to do what he does best.

In fairness the progressive pass is the second point on the tweet, he’s the highest for passes into the final third.

Indeed.

Would love to see a stat on how impactful those have been though.

Apropos of nothing, Grimes has 1 assist in 18 Championship appearances this season.

Revealing to see which of our current crop of posters are twp enough to fly their ‘ I clearly know nothing about elite level CM play’ and bash Matty.

First pick for yonks, for all the right reasons.

The last remaining shred of glue to bond us to our playing identity.

Bonkers how so many of our online fans are so clueless, so lacking in basic football intelligence, insight and analysis. It’s as if they’re watching an entirely different sport to us football intelligentsia, Risc.

Grimes ticks an awful lot of boxes - our best passer, outstanding levels of fitness, loyal to our club. The first name on the team sheet.

However, there remains a long standing and unanswered point for me. When he has his 'drop back' phases, is this because he is coached into doing so, or because he falls into a comfort zone? If the former, then I would hope that he stands up to his manager and exerts his opinion that his strengths lie further forward. There have been multiple examples where we have been attempting to get back into a game and Grimes is playing tiki-taka with the CB's and keeper.
