Apologies if this sounds like teaching granny to suck eggs. A sizeable phone memory is great however if you don't protect the valuable content inside a cloud storage space then you are at risk of loss if phone gets lost, becomes unrecoverable. Of course, it depends on how sentimental you are about photos, etc. Low risk of loss, but these things do happen.

I know this happens too many people, seen countless posts on FB ' Lost my phone, I don't really care about the phone, but it has treasured photographs on it'.

I have an I Phone, and I am hoping I have got this correct, I have no paid plan, but from looking it seems that when you make an icloud account, when first getting an I phone, they give you 5GB free, now looking at setting on mine, I Cloud it says 2,4GB of 5GB used, so would I be correct in assuming, if my phone was to be lost, or just stopped working, I could retrieve photos by signing into my apple account on a desktop, or a new I phone would synch from the previous?

Yes correct, think of icloud as a back up drive or USB stick whatever data is on there is accessible outside of your phone.

Indeed, I use Dropbox for cloud storage for the same reason but I do have to transfer them manually however, as I have a Google Pixel, any photos are stored in my Google account automatically anyway. About a year ago, I unexplicably managed to lock myself out of my phone and had to do a factory reset but all my photos were safe.

Yes that’s correct. Go and check if the back up is actually happening though, for example the phone won’t sync to cloud unless battery has certain charge or is plugged in to charger. Sometimes even then it fails to work. Go to ‘iCloud Back Up’ and check the date & time of last occurrence.

You’re going to need more storage though. Once you start snapping curry photos you will need the 50GB plan.

All google accounts come with 15GB of storage for backing up. If 15GB isn't enough they sell 100GB for about £1.50 a month

Google Pixel for me. My son put me onto it. Got the 6 as it was cheaper due to the recent launch of the 7. Perfectly decent phone. Set up was a doddle, just plug the new phone into the old one and in 15 mins everything copied over. Transfer SIM to new phone and it's done. Phone has the cordless charging facility which in theory I can use in my car but in practice is too slow and causes the phone to heat up. I always buy a phone outright and then get a SIM only contract. I pay something dumb like £10 per month for unlimited everything with 3

The last 2 phones I've had have been Pixels and very pleased with them. I've had the 5A for just over 2 years and it still does everything I need. Will probably upgrade to another Pixel eventually as I can't fault them.

Anyone that sticks with the traditional big name mobile phone providers these days, have more money than sense.

I’d never go back to them now, plenty of budget providers who piggy back the big boys for a fraction of the price and no contract to get stuck in.
