Piroe to Leicester

Madness to sell him to a rival, and for a fee which we'll have to spend most of to get someone of half his quality.
If the new owner/investors have real ambition and are not just paying lip service, they should be busting a gut to get him to stay.

Presumably we’d have to offer a new improved contract to get him to even consider committing to us? We can’t compete with the likes of Leicester. We could force him to see out his contract I suppose (we’d of course be well with our rights to do so, but not sure how healthy that would be). I’m resigned to him going. Sadly, we need player sales to stand still under these owners.

Aaron Collins would be a good shout from Bristol Rovers as a replacement.

Just ask Dick van Swedehead who's the crappest player he can think of and buy him.

Piroe isn’t even non league standard is he?

I think we would, and should, be reasonably happy if we got 12m with sell on for a player with zero pace and less than a year left on contract.

He's the sort of player who will shine in the right club, but disappear at the wrong one.

Think we can do that again?

We got Obafemi for a similar price in the same window. His scoring record was almost as good as Piroe's despite the drama. The players are out there. McBurnie and Brewster were both 1 in 2 strikers for us, even Jamal Lowe got 14 in a season.

Flemming is another one who was picked up cheap by Millwall (1.5M I believe) and he’s had a great season, I saw a few people saying we should go for him before he even joined Millwall.

New investors should try and persuade him to sign a new contract

Can’t if the player has his heart set on a move.

Agree with this but we just don’t know how the new investors will see it yet. We know the likes of Kaplan, Levein & their entourage have shown little ambition throughout their tenure and they will still have significant influence

All the business experts will be out in force to tell us what a great deal it will be selling Piroe irrespective of what we get for him.

Players capable of scoring 20 goals or more in successive seasons are few and far between at any level

Of course we have to sell him this summer.

We are losing money hand over fist (remember last year we lost £14m even after the Downes transfer) and we can’t continue like that. We don’t have the outside investment that allows it.

If you look at the division we are unlikely to go up unless we hit on a formula which would allow us to compete with teams that have budgets far in excess of ours. Multiples of ours even. So we have to work to build a squad that can become competitive over a few seasons. That’s an investment in a group of young players, with a smattering of experience, that can be moulded into something. In order to do that, we have to cash in on assets where we can and not be stupid and invest wisely.

If we get £10m for Piroe we have to take it. He will be gone at the end of next season anyway for nothing. So it would be equivalent of paying a £10m loan fee for a season. Madness. Probably madness to keep him at about £9m to be honest.
Everyone always says finding goals is difficult unless you pay a fortune and yet we always do.

What is difficult is finding that spark, or edge elsewhere in the pitch. I’d rather take the money and invest it in full backs / wingbacks, and some creativity and pace that we can build on for a couple of seasons.

A bidding war should get us to 15m surely.

Southampton will be sniffing aswell.

Agreed but If we’re losing money hand over fist, why we have got a “Head of Football Operations” and a “Director of Football “ ? Investors need to get a grip.

Yes, plus a chairman who’s presumably being paid handsomely as well to schlep his family over from DC.

I think you make a very good point - our back room administration costs seem excessive for where we are financially. They have done for quite some time under this ownership. Particularly when you consider commercial revenue and source of that. Sod all for stadium naming rights (I still don’t understand why we’ve given those away so cheaply - less than we had when we were league 1 donkeys years ago), local partners for stand naming, shirts (with the exception perhaps this year of Revival), back of shirts, shorts, training wear etc, dugout seats etc etc etc. It’s all a bit low key for the amount we are spending on non football activities.

A players heart can be brought for the right price, you know that. Trouble is we ain't got the right price.

Have we been linked with him in the past?

I don’t recall us having any concrete links with him, but I know Duff wanted to sign him at Barnsley, scores with both feet as well.
