Piroe to Leicester

Agreed but If we’re losing money hand over fist, why we have got a “Head of Football Operations” and a “Director of Football “ ? Investors need to get a grip.

I pointed this out last night on here, in response to posters gushing over this new lot. Nobody could answer me, but never mind because they've got money innit...

If a Premier League club doesn't come for him (which they should) then Leicester is the next best option because they are as near as damnit certain to be promoted. Apologies if this has already been stated because it's bleeding obvious.

I’m obviously being stupid so I’ll ask a stupid question.

When the Americans bought shares from the sell outs people strongly objected to them being referred to as “investors”, because that implied that they were putting money into the club, not just the sell outs’ pockets for said shares.

What’s different about these new “investors”?

Money has gone in the club till.

I don’t recall us having any concrete links with him, but I know Duff wanted to sign him at Barnsley, scores with both feet as well.

Scores with both feet? Now that's something I'd like to see

It’s finally made the press that Piroe is linked with Forest.

Forest is his favoured option. To (re)unite with Coops. Coops was the single reason Piroe came to us. Patiently pursued, Coops finally got his man, but Ofc the rest is history.

His dad / agent/ mentor is all over this, just as he was in ensuring he came to the Swans. Let’s hope Coops does us a favour and we get top $……

I think the best thing for the boy is to stay here , get us up; bang in another 20 and decide where he wants to go for 50+, or stay with us in the prem

Tidy, missed that. Way, way ahead of the mass media re Forest.

I was referring to current speculation suggesting Everton is his favoured option. Which ofc is nonsense. Coops is centre stage on this, let's hope he does the right thing for us, as is his way.

Of course we have to sell him this summer.

We are losing money hand over fist (remember last year we lost £14m even after the Downes transfer) and we can’t continue like that. We don’t have the outside investment that allows it.

If you look at the division we are unlikely to go up unless we hit on a formula which would allow us to compete with teams that have budgets far in excess of ours. Multiples of ours even. So we have to work to build a squad that can become competitive over a few seasons. That’s an investment in a group of young players, with a smattering of experience, that can be moulded into something. In order to do that, we have to cash in on assets where we can and not be stupid and invest wisely.

If we get £10m for Piroe we have to take it. He will be gone at the end of next season anyway for nothing. So it would be equivalent of paying a £10m loan fee for a season. Madness. Probably madness to keep him at about £9m to be honest.
Everyone always says finding goals is difficult unless you pay a fortune and yet we always do.

What is difficult is finding that spark, or edge elsewhere in the pitch. I’d rather take the money and invest it in full backs / wingbacks, and some creativity and pace that we can build on for a couple of seasons.

My comment was about ambition. I think we all understand the importance of balancing the books. Selling one of your best hopes of getting the goals to get us promoted does not equate to ambition. If the new ‘investors’ are serious about getting a return on investment then getting promoted is essential otherwise what is the point ?

At some stage the ‘ investors’ will have to take a risk. Running the club like Kaplan, Levein & Silverstein will lead to the same net result - failure to challenge for promotion and failure to balance the books. Selling our best players will leave us in an endless cycle of rebuilding which also represents a risk. Time to try something different ? … show some ambition

Clubs with a far smaller budget than ours have not only challenged for, but been promoted. We're stuck in a difficult position of not overextending enough to keep the "ambition" fans happy, but also not being responsible enough to make the "sustainable club" concept a reality. Operations costs being twice our income is not only horrendous for a business, it's also nothing special in this division and no way to guarantee success.

Brentford went up selling their best players every season. Luton went up working well with what they had access to. Clubs have taken point deductions for not meeting FFP requirements, or failing to pay they wages (repeatedly) when the cash ran out. Risks are overrated.

I think we have a better chance of promotion by selling Piroe for, say £12m and buying two players at £2-3m each and using the rest to cover some of the deficit. I don’t believe him to be so special in this division that he can get us up. As he hasn’t for the past two seasons despite scoring 20+ goals each time.

Some players are close to being that special - I’d argue that Sinclair was so special when we had him in that promotion season that it would not have made sense to sell him. For me, at least, Piroe doesn’t come close.

As an aside, it will be interesting to see how he does if he goes to the premier league. It’s rare that players that lack any sort of pace can score a load of goals. I hope he does well as I like him, but I’m not convinced at premier league level.

Us not going up the last two seasons had nothing to do with Piroe, the blame for that lies squarely at the door of a shite manager and defence and well you know it. It's a team game and Piroe more than played his part it's just a shame the defence didn't because if they had we'd of been in the playoffs last season guaranteed. Is he premier quality, only time will tell.
