It is tactical, Sheehan explained it in the fans forum. My 12 year old pointed out the obvious risk of it and the response was that not many players had the quality to expose it.I’m not sure it’s a case of ‘forgoing defensive duties’. I think it’s a conscious tactical decision for the wingers to tuck in when the ball is on the opposite side of the pitch to help with our press and win the ball back higher up the pitch. The downside is it opens us up to cross field passes.
Pros and cons and I’m sure it’s something that both our coaches and the opposition have picked up on.
