RUSS SPEAKS

jasper_T said:
No one has any patience these days. It's not like our own business has to wait for Russell to be holding up a Southampton shirt in a presser. Football contracts tend to run July 1st to June 30th so there's plenty of room for arguments crossing the t's while most of the office staff are on holidays.

Personally I hope we are messing them around making them either wait a month or pay a bumper PL compensation rate. That's exactly the kind of shithousery Russell Martin would applaud/engage in on the sidelines after all.

You’re right about the contracts, but the situation needs resolving asap. Lots of clubs will have started their contract discussions already and players joining a club want to know who their new manager is, style of play etc etc. it’s not going to look good if the club signs tries to sign a player and they can’t or won’t be able to say who the manager is etc.

We've signed loads of players who the manager has had no interest in using recently, so it can't be too great an obstacle.

Anyone sense a u turn coming? How hard can it be to agree an 800K compensation package? Something needs to give if it’s us we could end up leaving Southampton looking elsewhere.

If this happened then Silverstein's backtracking from his messages will be spectacular to watch

He’ll make out he was hacked and do a Winter and hide away.

Same cupboard as Kaplan, Levien and the Trust!

A Premier League release clause for a club in the Championship

Makes sense

Unlike our owners to try and change things at the last minute...

And all the time Rome burns...

To be fair… when they starting negotiating for him they were still a Premier League club… I’m with the owners on this one… in the past they’ve had it in the neck for letting assets go too cheaply.

A confirmed relegated Premier League club

The problem with our owners - and I speak from first hand experience - is they always believe they hold the aces even when they have a hand full of fours

Can’t see how Russ carries on here now, I think it’s fair to say his relationship with the owners has completely broken down (as it will with anyone else employed at the club now, and in future) so there’s no going back.

But wouldn’t surprise me at all if Southampton turned their attention elsewhere and we are left with a Cooper situation.

Always amazes me how many of our fans are happy for the club to just crumble and give in when selling a player or manager. I guess they're so blinded by their dislike of the owners that they can't do anything right. The same ones who will probably complain that we've sold a player at an undervalue.

Southampton have obviously had their eye on Martin for a while, they've probably met with him, discussed targets, plans for next season, etc. They aren't going to go and just rip that all up over a bit of compensation and start again. We are probably talking about relative peanuts for a club like them. It makes no difference to us whether Russ leaves today and it takes us two weeks to appoint a new manager or he leaves in 2 weeks time and we appoint a new manager almost immediately because we've been working away in the background.

In any event, it's all speculation anyway and the finer details that are holding up a couple of deals worth substantial amounts of money could be absolutely anything.

Would not argue with the points you made.
However I always like to put a reverse spin on things when it comes to our club.
How we as fans would feel if it was us chasing a manager in a similar situation. We would be saying they can Fark off.
My issue mainly is that we could have offered an extension in the early part of the season when we had a bit of a run if they really wanted to hold onto him.
They showed no interest in offering an extension until they heard clubs may be in for him.
In my opinion they don't want him but the rustle of addition ££££££s has got the money mad yanks excited.
They could easily change their minds as the season has only just finished and they will no doubt have an alternative manager in mind.

I'm more concerned we provoke them into really thinking about what they are getting. A less successful manager and bigger bullshitter than Nathan Jones.

I agree we don't want him but now that someone else does we may as well get as much money for him as possible.

It doesn't really matter what our fans would be saying - what matters is what the clubs want. And Southampton have clearly identified Martin as being the man for the job and given their season only ended 4 days ago and their manager was contracted until today, probably don't especially care whether he is confirmed today, tomorrow or in a fortnight.

At the end of the day, we are negotiating a big money deal with Southampton and they are negotiating a big money deal with Martin and a few others. There is probably also negotiations between us and Martin around his contract too. These things don't happen overnight.
