Falling birth rate = need for more (legal) migrantsWe kind of already do with the aid budget, which should be a win-win if people thought more deeply about it.
More trade = economic improvement.
Economic improvement = fewer migrants
Agreed. However, I think FOM in Europe was the answer to this not lots of migration from the commonwealth. The former is economically advantageous, the latter is shown to be more negative in relation to economic output unless very targeted eg NHS staffing.Falling birth rate = need for more (legal) migrants
Agree but more on point there are different ways of reparation and the bill in financial terms is staggering.Agreed. That’s because we raped and pillaged those poor countries and people.Agree but more on point there are different ways of reparation and the bill in financial terms is staggering.
In 1833, Britain used 40% of its national budget to buy freedom for all slaves in the Empire. Britain borrowed such a large sum of money for the Slavery Abolition Act that it wasn’t paid off until 2015. This means that the British tax payer, including myself at the time helped pay off that debt. Britain and Portugal were responsible for 70% of slave traffic and is it the crown, the Government or Traders who are culpable? Should all nations be accountable for the actions of two centuries past? That’s because we raped and pillaged those poor countries and people.
The foreign aid payments already made should be deducted from the total bill.
Reparations don’t have to be cash to their governments, it could go to building schools and universities, hospitals, etc etc.
Restorative justice can also play a part, let our youngsters learn just what we did to those countries in the name of greed, true history.
They paid the slave owners, that’s not reparation. In 1833, Britain used 40% of its national budget to buy freedom for all slaves in the Empire. it gave the poor souls freedom. Clearly that was the first and most important step. Now for the reparation. How is that going to work in reality. Can arguments be made that those commonwealth nations have benefited economically and culturally through the British govenment paying the slave owners giving them freedom and hence the development of the nations? They paid the slave owners, that’s not reparation.
Yes, all nations involved should pay
Most of that money never left London.it gave the poor souls freedom. Clearly that was the first and most important step. Now for the reparation. How is that going to work in reality. Personally, I would have made it illegal to "own" a slave as opposed to financially remunerate the "owners" even though the same governments would have been complicit in the original trade. This is a historical clusterfuck and beyond the modern nation saying sorry it is simply wrong for us to pay for "our"ancestors wrong doing. Is Britain even the nation is was 200 years ago? If I went to many cities I could be confused at what country I was actually in. What I am saying here is that time has moved on and the nations have evolved. History lessons are a huge part of explaining what has happened though, both in the Carribean, and the UK.Most of that money never left London.
We stole their lands, killed tens of thousands of them, enslaved Africans to work those lands to reap the profits.
I’ll admit it’s not straight forward, and I have no idea how to do it fairly. But to say we paid them to get the abolishment done is extremely insulting to those people.
