Anybody happy with the striker options we currently have?

Do we need to move players on and recruit further in this area?
I'm a fan of Vipotnik, and I don't have massive issues with Yates. It's purely that he is down to his last year of contract. Cullen though our top scorer is hot and cold. And Wales is unproven at this level. Maybe I'm being greedy, but I would like another striker.

It wouldn't worry me going into the season with the forward options that we have.

Vipotnik, Yates and Cullen are all capable of getting into double figures with adequate service, and perhaps Wales is too. With a more attacking style of play the likes of Eom, Widell, Inoussa, Galbraith and Ronald can also get between 5-10 each. Chuck in another 5-10 goals from the rest of the squad (Tymon, Burgess etc) and then that is more than enough to get us top six. Realistically we only need one or two players managing to get into double figures as long as those others chip in.

Leeds were the only free scoring team in the division last season. Nobody else got even close to them. Burnley had just two players get into double figures. Sunderland's top scorer managed 13 with nobody else getting into double figures. Sheff Utd had two players in double figures, with a top scorer on 11. Coventry just one player in double figures, scoring 12. By contrast, Norwich had the second top goalscorer after Piroe and finished lower than we did.

It is an absolute myth that we need a 20 goal striker to achieve promotion. Style of play and creating an environment where as many different players as possible get into scoring positions is much more useful.
Aye. That’s why clubs famously pay so little for strikers.

I love the optimism of thinking the 4 forwards we currently have could all score double figures and 5 midfielders could get 5-10 goals, however we play.
Getting into scoring positions is one thing. Actually scoring is quite another. And good strikers seem to get into those scoring positions far more frequently than poor strikers. It’s part of what makes them good.

In practice, we will only have Yates here if no one will take him, probably the same for Vipotnik and Bianchini.

I’ll be astonished if we don’t bring in a forward or two. It would show complete lack of ambition.

In the year we were promoted, it was on the back of Sinclair scoring an absolute bag full (about 23 or even more from memory). It made all the difference. And even then we brought in an additional striker to get us over the line.

Indeed, which is why I actually said...

The four of them wouldn't get enough game time to all score that many, but at least three of them are capable of it based on both what I've seen and past performance. Don't know enough about Wales, but the signs are good.

Eom scored three in eleven games from 8th March onwards. Extrapolated over the season that would get him into double figures. Ronald scored three last season. Another one or two in a more attacking side shouldn't be beyond him. I don't think it's an extreme belief that players like Widell, Inoussa & Galbraith could chip in 10-15 between them too.

I wouldn't disagree that we're likely to move at least one striker out, probably Yates, but my initial point stands.

We do need a striker.

But totally disagree on the lack of ambition if we don't.

Spending to date
Inouessa 5 mil
Widdel 3 mil
Wales 400k
Santos free
Burgess free but will be on big wages.
Galbraith 1.6mil

That's 10 million quid in fees a lot of championship clubs have spent zero.

10 million is massive by our standards.

I know what some sites say, but there is absolutely no way we spent 5 million on Inouessa. Nor 3 million on Widell.

That may be total, total, total when you add in all sorts of clauses like promotion, but no way we’ve guaranteed that amount. Absolutely no way.

The overestimation of transfer fees that goes on across the board on these public transfer sites is astonishing. They are often miles out.

I’m not suggesting btw we spend £10m on a striker. I’m suggesting we do better than Yates and Vipotnik. I suspect we will bring in a loan…

Doing better than Yates and Vipotnik is quite a low bar in fairness.

There are a lot of ‘ifs’ in that analysis…

I see absolutely nothing in Yates, Vipotnik and probably Cullen to suggest they should be leading the line in a championship team that is genuinely attempting to compete for a play off place. (To be fair to Cullen, I don’t think he is a number 9). I have no idea about Wales, but he is a prospect rather than a proven striker at this level.

I would probably keep Cullen for his work rate and his ability to fit in in a variety of roles, but unless Yates has improved markedly (remember we actually shipped him to a rival on loan last year so it wasn’t as though the coaching staff, which included Sheehan, were particular fans) and unless Vipotnik has suddenly discovered speed of thought and body in the last two months, I can’t see us keeping them unless we have no option.
Keeping one as a back up would probably be ok but not as our first choice.

Obviously, all of us, myself included, would be absolutely thrilled if they all suddenly turn into goal machines and if Ronald discovers an end product and becomes Scotty Sinclair.

Those sites were quoting 6m euros or 5.1m pounds. Everybody knows whatever the price actually is it includes adds on etc so even if those numbers were accurate we probably wouldn't end up paying it all cos of the add on clauses. Anyway....

So you know we didn't pay 5m for Inoussa.
But you don't know know how much we did.
So bottom line is you don't know if we did or we didn't.

We scored 13 goals in the last 8 games of the season. No idea if we could maintain that over the course of a season, but if we did, that would be 73 goals scored.

How many clubs bettered that last season? One, in the form of champions Leeds, who scored 95. In fact, Norwich were the only other team who broke the 70 goal barrier and as the Dr has noted, they finished below us despite having the joint second highest scorer in the division.

We have lost Darling and O'Brien, who were both goal scorers in those 8 games, so hopefully some of the new signings can contribute. However we scored at that rate without a high scoring striker, so it does further the point that you don't need a 20 goal striker if you can play football that creates chances for multiple players.

It wasn't Burnley, it was Leeds United , who also finished champions.
