Summer Transfer Window

A point made on discussion boards by one of our analytical team in fairness to the other 'Dr'

There can't be many other fanbases in the division, if not the league who have as much experience in witnessing how the particular style of play employed by a head coach can make a squad of players look much poorer than they are as us.

Anybody happy with the striker options we currently have?

Do we need to move players on and recruit further in this area?

Well we have had famine and feast over the last two decades from exciting attacking football, to some of the dullest and mind numbing football. I hope Sheehan's reign is based on pragmatic but attacking football-such as Brendan gave us.

I do think our striking department needs a shot in the arm.
However to do that we do realistically need to move on at least one more of our current strikers, the most likely candidate being Yates but the club would probably listen to offers for Bianchini, Cullen or Vipotnik as well

On paper I think we have 3 striking options that each can score 10+ goals in Vipotnik, Yates and Cullen but I think we’ll be after someone who more encompasses the strengths of all three. We need someone who presses like Yates but can hold it up and bring others into the game like Vipotnik started to do. This player would also have to be a clinical finisher like Cullen. If we could meld them into one we’d have our perfect striker in my opinion.

Cullen's problem is that he is extremely ill suited to playing as a lone striker, his hold up play and ability to bring others into the game is the most lacking aspect to his game. Its why he saw success with Wales when Bellamy utilized him as a number 10 rather than as a striker

Vipotnik's biggest problem is his pressing game. He is strong and can hold up the ball well but he often doesn't cut off the best passing angle for defenders with the ball and he sometimes is caught on his heels when sudden opportunities come about

Yates's issue is that his finishing ability is weak. He can press the ball well and has a good instinct for getting into scoring positions but he lacks the determination to put himself into potential harm's way and will often pull out of challenges where he might get clattered and will often need three, four or more chances to convert one.

I would like to see a striker in put it depends on moving players out first, surely.

Defenders and holding midfielder is the next step.

I'd like more gametime for Bianchini next year, he's our best player to lead the press. All of Vipotnik's faults (athleticism, energy) are covered by Bianchini, even if he's less of a finisher. Can't see them getting much gametime together, but they'd compliment one another well I expect.

He also offers something completely different to Cullen, Yates, and Vip through his pace. Cullen and Yates are basically the same player, so no need for both, finding a buyer for Yates is the issue

Bianchini is a winger by trade, primarily on the right side.
He is another example of a player criminally misused by Williams's obsession with the idea of "reinventing players"

Agree with a lot of this post - except the bit about Yates finding good positions - he literally hides behind more physically imposing defenders and becomes invisible.
The other issue I have is that you and another poster give a laundry list of strikers who COULD get 10+ goals in a season (Vip Yates Cullen Bianchini Wales etc). While this is true - statistically (on track record) they would all need to play 40 games.
Unless we play 5 up front we will likely only get a maximum 20-25 goals out of our 2 most forward players combined, whichever get selected.
This is why we need to upgrade if at all possible.

You could make an argument for all of Vip Yates Bianchini and Cullen being transferred out
Best argument is for keeping Cullen as he's a good finisher and cheap impact sub and can play well at 10
Bianchini is a really poor finisher, and Yates only slightly better
Vip is fair to middling finisher who doesn't put himself about but has an all round game otherwise
Y&B need to leave
I'd go with Cullen Vip Wales and ANOther - ideally Oli
