Summer Transfer Window

Based on Saturday's starting 11 (but excluding the Darling injury) the lowest hanging fruit for upgrades are, in order:

Fulton
Ronald
Cullen
Key

And TBC depending on whether his improvement continues:

Eom

Improve on that lot and we really should be playoff contenders *if* the league remained at the same quality.

I don't get this thinking when you look at the holes in the team that will be there this summer.

Two of our most important players currently - Darling and O'Brien - will not be here next season unless things change. Our 3rd choice CB in Delcroix will be leaving. We're also set to lose our 3rd choice CM in Allen and solid versatile defensive backup in Naughton.

We've also got players coming back from loans, still under contract and presumably with no futures here - Yates, Kukharevych, Fisher - that will need to be moved on. We've also got players who haven't been out on loan who are still under contract and we need to find buyers for in Tjoe-A-On and Ginnelly.

So from what I can see, we need 2 CB's as we only have Cabango and youth players signed for next season. We need 2 CM's as we only have Franco and Fulton currently. We need a backup keeper unless we're keeping the Fish and we need cover for Key and Tymon. We also need to look at backup/competition for Vipotnik up-front if (as presumed) Yates and Kuka are not wanted.

So that's 7 players potentially needed to fill holes in the squad, with at least 2 or 3 of those needing to be good enough to be regular starters.

With all those needs, and not a lot of money to spend, it seems crazy to think that improving on the likes of Ronald, Key and Fulton is a priority and that we'd be playoff contenders if we did that.

Excellent summary of where we're at. It will be interesting to see if Sheehan tries to get a tune out of Kuka. He's still young, and at least is good in the air. If you're going to bang it long you may as well have a proper target to aim at. Yates will surely leave, as will Cullen if we get offers over £3 million. I know he doesn't get much love from the faithful, but his stats are above average for the league and that will count for a lot. That, and his showings for Wales.

I think both Naughton and Allen will be retained, albeit on reduced contracts. Allen in particular will be desperate to play in another World cup.

Be amazed if we get offers of £3m+ for Cullen. He's 26, and still hasn't hit 30 league goals for the Swans. I know he struggles with coming in and out of the team, and fitting a few positions, but that's such a low hit-rate that you can't imagine it oozes demand.

There is the outlier of Wrexham potentially wanting more proven Welsh talent, so potential to fleece them of a few quid though. Expecting them to sign at least one Swan this summer.

They’ll sign Wassisname that used play for us from Bolton, v. good player.

Ben Davies would be an excellent signing for us if we could make it happen. Fit as a fiddle, still an extremely good player, could play Championship football no problem at all. I'd sooner sack off Naughton and Allen's wages to bring him in, rather than keep either of those two.

If what was being said when LW was manager by his coaching team that we needed more physicality and height in the team I feel that maybe a road we go down

"Based on Saturday's starting 11 (but excluding the Darling injury) ..."

As for your more expansive assessment, great post.

I think unless Ben wants to come home. If he drops down to the championship. I see one of the relegated sides in for him or alternatively one of promoted teams. I believe he is free so no transfer fee involved so he would still receive decent wages with those sides.

Seems to be the case that Spurs intend to activate a one year extension clause in his contract anyway.

Ben previously confirmed he was on £400pw with us early on in our first season in the Prem, so he may think he's done us enough favours in regards to playing for a lower wage!

I think you underestimate Cullen's appeal. 10 goals this season is joint 19th - 2 more goals is joint 6th (and a lot of those above him have penalties in their tallies). Those 10 goals are 95th percentile, which shows that for every Piroe you have 3 Meite's. His goals and assists is joint 22nd.

His goals and assists for the last three seasons in the Championship alone are 11, 12 and now 13. That sort of consistency attracts interest, especially when you factor in that a lot of his games have been as a 9, a position to which he is totally unsuited. In teams that play with wingbacks he would be a real asset, in a 3-4-2-1, or as a second striker in a 3-5-2 or 3-4-1-2. Wrexham play with wingbacks and need to replace Mullin. Cullen would be perfect. I would be disappointed if we didn't get 4 million for him, but 3 million would be Ok.

I wonder if we might be in for Plymouth's Bundu. 10 goals and 6 assists in a relegated side is pretty impressive. Especially when you factor in his excellent defensive stats and physicality. He has the attributes of a 9. Only downside is his age - 28.

Would be an upgrade on Ronald, I’m hoping we get Poku on a free.

Hopefully get some business done early this year and settle the nerves.
