Tata

I'd love to see some proper support in the media for the contractors in there, it is something close to my heart. I've worked in Ebbw Vale, Llanwern and Port Talbot works over the past 30 years. The company i work for still does a significant amount of work in Port Talbot, not so much Llanwern these days. We have employees who have worked at PT for over 40 years, and there are hundreds, if not thousands of others the same as them. Most of those will come out of there with nothing when this goes through.

Most of the steel workers will come out of there with handsome pay outs and pensions that the contractors could only dream of. I can remember back when us contractors in those places weren't allowed to use their toilets, could only use certain canteens at certain times. It is the contractors that have kept those places going since they've been running. But other than a one liner here and there in the news, fuck all is said about them, or the shit deals they are about to have.

As always you articulate the point far better than I ever could. How many more times do people have to be shafted before they wake up?
Governments have given Tata billions to help improve emissions and pollution, after Tata had threatened countless times to close the plant because of the continual demands to improve emissions and pollutants the plant send's into atmosphere, to say this as nothing to do with Net xero is a ridiculous claim, why are the government given them 500million to help with cost of changing,

Tata and government are kidding themselves if they think Electric arc is gonna solve its ills, firstly they are gonna have to massively increase its ability to produce its own electric to run the arc, the electric infrastructure in the country is struggling to cope domestically and commercially with the demand now, the change to EV and is massively increasing the demand as well, energy companies are using more and more electric vans etc and its a nightmare with the loss of production due to the drivers of those vans having charge their vehicles throughout most of their working weeks due to distance involved between jobs, on top of that those vehicles take longer to charge in this colder weather and can lose between 10 to 30 percent of their charge.

This Government are so obsessed with zero carbon, whilst conveniently ignoring the massive amount of pollution these huge countries emit into atmosphere on top of that they are gonna add to that by importing steel from Countries like China and India, so Great Britain will still be contributing to Global Warming in doing so, its laughable. so Lisa as a point about money because net zero is another tax on the British hard working tax payer, its all a massive con.

Plus China and India and both are massive allies of Russia, again risking the security of the country why has this come to a head now, with the war in Ukraine? hidden agenda drawn up by India after pressure from Russia perhaps, might be a tad far fetched but its plausible

I need a cuppa and a lie down after that 😂 .

That's true about the use of facilities by contractors they put key code boxes on doors to washrooms and toilets, contractors weren't deemed trustworthy in some areas even though it was contractors who maintained them. Laughable really.

You’re not a fan of being challenged on your (usually witless) opinions are you?
It doesn't bother me, as you have said, it's just an opinion, and I can only base my opinions on what i see, now if somebody wants to question another's opinion, then they should have the facts in front of them to prove why another persons opinion is incorrect, for me. I think that's the way it works, or should so anyway.

Sadly I can't see this decision being reversed, unless there's a complete Public outcry which is unluckily and even if the was I doubt it'll change anything, ain't heard or read anything from Starmer I may well have missed it though?

Done my time in British Steel , Corus then Tata to finish my career in Industy , got out at the height of the appalling issue of the Pension Plan , another story not to dwell on , Financial Advisors , vultures .

Days of following in your fathers footsteps , he worked there , a leg up to entry into that job , easy .

Driving past Aberavon RFC ground on the M4 , one eye on the speed cameras and my mph dial.
Look across at the Blasts realising that industry and Steel making are a part of my thoughts .

Port Talbot / Abbey will now become the best recyling plant in the UK , accepting worn out white goods throw outs , helping the enviroment of course , Carbon Steel is not needed any more .

Imports for rail tracks will now be the norm , jobs not needed in our manufacturing skills .

Really good luck to the satellite staff , contract cleaners , engineers , caterers and Transport drivers .

Some will applaud this news , for me a sad day .
Why would some applaud the news? How can there be an upside to this?

Same old Welsh Labour, with the same excuses, it's not our fault, it's Westminster's.. They really must think people are stupid, even Adrian Childs the ITV Wales reporter called Gething out on the WAGS handling of this.

I won't profess to be an expert on the subject, but I do think why would they close it down, and then have to import steel from other countries? It's all well and good directing the blame towards Brexit, yet when the Uk actually needs what Port Talbot can produce, why import it? For me it's to do with this net zero malarky.

Tories privatised the British Steel Corporation back in the 80's.

Tories privatised the energy companies so now have highest energy costs in Europe.

Tories created Brexit which means no money from EU to help the area and workers when west wales and valleys are the poorest part of Europe and Port Talbot voted for Brexit.

It costs to become net zero, the UK and some of its allies are leading the way, whilst countries such as India and china are playing fly dull. This means that whilst it is costing the UK billions to go green, and the cost of doing so are ultimately
being passed onto the consumer, making goods expensive. Places like India and China can make things cheaper, because as I see it they are not playing the game. We are being royally fcked over

All I believe is the absolute fact that any excuse governments have got to make the hard working tax payer to pay more for them to waste and make up the shortfall they've caused, its been making a loss for more years than I can remember I worked in there for over 12yrs and seen and experienced lots of stuff there.

Apologies, for my unnecessary comments I made.

No need to apologise - emotions are high understandably.

You were correct that I’ve never worked there. My Uncle did (at that works). And my Dad. And Grandad. And great granddad, and great grandmother and her sister. Not all at Port Talbot, but for British Steel and before that the Steel company of Wales. My Dad worked for them when they were out on strike for months when I was young. I remember it clearly.

But they are conning people with the net zero excuse. Neither this government nor Tata Steel give much of a toss about meeting net zero by 2050. As can be seen from the government granting new fossil fuel licences and even aiming to grant new coal licenses. And Tata have a pretty bad reputation environmentally.

This is simply the closure of a loss making business which they subsidised for a long while when they were trying to get a merger off with ThyssenKrupp (prevented by the EU in the end as anti competitive).

The government subsidised the redundancies (effectively) plus the move to the new production which employs far fewer people so is more profitable. They weren’t prepared to pay the amount needed to keep the whole thing going. But not because of net zero, because (a) it would have cost a fortune (b) nationalisation was not an option for them ideologically and (c) it helps massively with the new trade deal they have agreed with India.

This government don’t seem to care even remotely about security of nationally important industry (the only exception being their pretence that new oil fields will somehow secure the UK’s energy needs - it won’t, but that’s a different discussion).

they are the ultimate free marketeers - extreme globalists who only care about making vast wealth for themselves and their mates. Hence huge migration figures, cheap workforce, removal of protections for the population, attempts to reduce standards in environmental issues, food production, employment rights, rights of protest, etc etc etc.

and they’re doing it all while creating culture war based bogey men - boat people, the ‘woke’, and now net zero. It’s the equivalent of the EU being blamed for anything bad for years. They do it in the hope that people who won’t EVER fall into their preferred group of the super wealthy globalist elite will instead decide to fear these new bogeymen and vote for these charlatans anyway.

same as they voted for brexit which was always going to screw them over. There have been interviews with workers at Port Talbot who voted for brexit. The plant’s main customer base was the EU ffs. What did they think was going to happen when trade barriers were erected (and remember that it’s only been a year where these barriers have been up really, which is why these decisions are being taken now).

People have been lied t9 over and over again, and they are being lied to now. It’s all about money.

What an absolute load of baloney.. I must say, presented well, but when you actually dissect what you have said, it's all utter rubbish, well 85% of it, it's just a disguised post, trying to make out as a well meaning one, where in fact that's all you are doing is having a go at the Tories and Brexit.
