Swansea City saddened by passing of former manager and player Terry Yorath | Swansea
Swansea City is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former manager and player Terry Yorath at the age of 75.
I think we went up in the play offs beating Rotherham then Torquay over two legs. I was one of the “Torquay 300” (all the tickets they’d let us have) and got soaked being kept in for ages afterwards in an open away end. Great memories of my first proper away season - 1-4 at orient and 0-1 at league leader’s Northampton Town courtesy of a late goal from either Pascoe , McCarthy or Ian LoveDiv 4 champions in the late 80’s, Brazil toppled in 1990. Thanks for the memories, Terry.
I went to the Rotherham home match. They were in the Division above us. In the early days where the club finishing 4th from bottom in the league above joined the 3 clubs finishing 4,5 & 6th. I think it was 3 automatics. It all change when they decided to play the finals at Wembley. I also went to the home Torquay match. I remember goalkeeper Peter Guthrie being on loan to us from Spurs??? Was that the season when Mike Hughes had to retire because of the bangs he had to his head? I thought Mike Hughes was a really good keeper, it was really sad. Lee Sharp was in the Torquay squad for the away final second leg, I seem to recall?I think we went up in the play offs beating Rotherham then Torquay over two legs. Yes, I got ahead of myself. I think it was the year where we barely scraped the play-off, but went up.I think we went up in the play offs beating Rotherham then Torquay over two legs. Aldershot. That Wolves game came straight after by the looks of it but Im not sure if Yorath played in that game. He definitely played at Aldershot. If remember correctly we played Wolves away in the mid eighties where we lost 4-1 I'm sure he played in that game. Was he a player manager for us for a while.
Day spoilt by the Wolves subway crew..

Had a quick look and looks like he made one appearance for us which was the Wolves game!Aldershot. That Wolves game came straight after by the looks of it but Im not sure if Yorath played in that game. He definitely played at Aldershot.

We ended up with a points deductiion from fielding ineligble players from that period. We appealed and it was recinded but we still fkd up promotion that season. RIP Mr Yorath. The manager that brought hope back to the club after the worst three years I can recall as a Swansea supporter.
Its a long time ago. Maybe the Aldershot game was what got us the penalty. I know we could barely put a team on the pitch. We beat the leaders Northampton on valentines day and I dont think we won another game all season. The biggest collapse I ever saw. 6 points clear in 2nd to mid table in 2months. Edit: Ok we lost 12 of 16. Managed to win 3. My memory has faded much more than I reallised.Really sad news, his time here was before my time but always seemed like a top bloke, RIP.
