That is definitely the case.

But I guarantee most know more about championship football than the vast, vast majority of Americans. Largely because we’ve actually watched it. Until a couple of seasons ago it wasn’t even available to watch in the US outside the odd game.

I agree it’s a huge gamble and we’ve definitely seen more Championship football than our owners, but I look at Maresca, Farke, Wagner. All had limited to absolutely no experience (although Farke had a few years in at a very low level in Germany). It’s not unprecedented in this league.

I would have gone for Thorup myself but I’m happy to give Matos a chance.

I think we can all agree Sheehan was considered an inexperienced manager when we made him permanent in the summer and he'd managed almost double the amount of games Matos had over his two caretaker spells (20).

It’s genuinely pointless.

All of us will hope against hope he turns out to be brilliant.

But for some fans to be talking themselves into taking any position other than this is an enormous gamble is crazy.

Any appointment is going to be a risk. The guys will have plenty of experience built up from working with some of the best players and coaching staff in the world.

It’s an enormous gamble and one that clearly is inconsistent with off field aspirations.

That’s the problem though.

Working with some of the best players in the world isn’t the experience you necessarily need for managing in the championship.

I can see the thinking. Someone who is used to player development at a top level working with our young squad in trying to develop them. But developing young players at Liverpool to slot into a squad chock full of brilliance isn’t the same as developing a 23 year old Swedish midfielder to play alongside other players also needing development in the championship. One is developing individuals, the other is developing a whole squad.

Feels like they are going for a general style. By all accounts, Hellberg wanted to control the game and be hardworking off the ball. That’s the broad strokes of what Matos is about from what I’ve been reading. For me it’s encouraging that they know what they want in a manager. I totally get the concerns at the same time though.

I know nothing about the bloke so good luck to him. I know that no one cares what I think but I’m gonna tell you anyway - it’s a terrible, terrible idea and if it happens this board is going to make more of a mess of this than the last lot. This time next year we’ll be following Cardiff around due to their failure to get promoted.
