"Head coach Martin has been eager to add to his squad before the 11pm deadline on September 1, but, speaking after the defeat to Nathan Jones' men, he confirmed that - following his conversations with the ownership group - the Swans are unable to make further signings at present."

"We're [Martin and owners] in constant conversation," he said. "The group is what we have at the minute. I'm sure people will be frustrated by that. You can either take your frustration out on the team or really stick behind the young men."

What must these conversations sound like?

Then why send the last 3 players out on loan you minge.

I'm starting to think that was purely a cost cutting measure. Because it's not like it's allowed us the ability the bring other players. Sounds desperate I know but surely if Martin had the choice he'd have kept them in the squad instead of getting no one new?

He must know that Whittaker or Joseph would have been a better option on the bench than Josh Thomas? No offence at all the boy.

That basically says, in public:

My team is not up to it and
I take no responsibility to manage my resources more effectively

So, it’s not me, it’s them.

He’s a real cunt.

Rhys Williams, Ogbeta, Burns, Fisher, Joseph, Sorinola and Wood (to a certain extent) were all pointless signings.
Think how much better we could have utilised those transfer fees and wages.

Then why didn't he play them when they were here. I get what you are saying, but i'm not so sure.

I don’t think it’s cost cutting. Instead I think it’s a level of stubbornness above and beyond one that we thought possible. Martin thinks he can do it his way with his hand picked players and with total disregard for the tools that he inherited. He complains about not having the players to match his system and yet doesn’t find a plan B that allows us to play to strengths.

There was a thread after the Blackburn game in which I stated that during August he needed to win both home games and avoid defeat in all three away; a minimum of seven points in effect. If he’s going to reach seven then he’s going to do it the hard way.

I’m done with him either way. Having watched his body language today and the lack of alternative tactics is enough for me.

Whittaker or Joseph would offer more than Cullen, never mind Josh Thomas.

It's the same kind of nonsense we saw with Cooper. Refusing to use the options available and then complaining about the lack of options. You need to make the best of what you have available, which is something we're far from doing.

Is the current squad really any weaker than the one that made the playoffs two years in a row? Even if that team had Ayew, this one has Obafemi and Piroe.

Apparently we must also sell a key player too

We're on our third manager, third Head of Recruitment (whatever its called now) and third Chairman since being in the Championship.

Fans say the same crap about lack of investment yet its much worse than that.

We're still stuck with players we don't want on good wages. If we're able to piss money away on that then it's a lack of leadership from top to bottom that's the real problem.

Maybe don't sign Morgan Whittaker on a four and a half year contract when Steve Cooper didn't want him. Maybe it would be better only signing players the manager wants because then we can avoid having up to 10 players to get rid of down the line.

Mind you Martin isn't blameless when it comes to Ogbeta.

Like I said, this mess is down to the owners

I’m not convinced Martin knows what he’s doing, but yep the (lack of) leadership from the owners or their representatives is the fundamental problem. We were lucky to have Birch in hindsight - he made a couple of great appointments and supported the managers more (although easier then as we had parachute payments).

If we’re now in a position where the game is too expensive for the owners, they need to feck off. Having to sell with such a piss poor team as this is a very bad sign. Things will only continue to get worse under them.

Yeah, money isn’t the be all and end all. As nice and useful as more money would be, bad decisions are a worse problem. We seemed to be getting things right m(ish) under Birch (Cooper was a decent pick as he proved with Forest last year). It’s all gone a bit tits up under Winter. The managerial situation last summer was a farce and now we’re in a mess with a paper thin squad. I’m not sure where the blame lies for that, but we’re in a bit of a mess.

It completely astounds me that a club in our position can allow a complete disconnect between those identifying players and those coaching them.

I’m glad we are not going to continue living beyond our means.

The reality is that Martin has a pool of decent championship players, some ok, some below par, some well above par and he needs to grow up, stop whinging about every single thing and start managing his resources properly. I have no doubt that Guidolin for example could make what we have a very competitive outfit. The main problem lies with Martin.
