Imagine the UK invading Ireland (again) just because we wanted a lasting legacy of how fucking awesome we were. Then after everyone hated us, tried to economically bring us to our knees and we lost lots of our troops and were visibly weaker the Americans came over and had peace negotiations with the UK and didn't include Ireland saying that the Irish deserved it and yeah have even more of their land.

Nah, I don't think I could ever take sides in a war that I don't fully understand, how it reached the point where it is now! Same as Palestine v Israel.. It goes back years before all these current conflicts.

My eyes are wide open. All what's kicked this off, is me saying ' I do not understand the complexities' so by that I mean what has led them to this. Maybe we are talking at the minium the last 50 years, the escalations, or wrong doings that actually led to Russia invading Ukraine,.

By 50 years of escalation do you mean Poland Latvia Estonia Lithuania Rumania Bulgaria Hungary Czech Republik Slovakia now free from Russian oppression? Have a word with people from those countries. Then come back with your theoretical clap trap.

That's ok.. Honest to god, when I got involved in this thread, I swear, I did not mean to wind people up. I honestly thought, putting a bit of input into the conversation, whilst remaining neutral would be ok.

I really do try, especially on delicate subjects such as this.

I'm not some bloody hippy parading around with a sign saying STOP THE WAR, it's been a long time now, just about 3 years.

Basically your words solve nothing, they may look good, but they do zero for the citizens of Russia and Ukraine, who are still getting killed for nothing!! What the hell is wrong with me, not taking any sides? And just saying stop it?

Fair response and you’re right to question what can be done.

The War does need to be stopped I’ve been long arguing for a negotiation on this and it probably should have come much sooner.

That would have to entail some land being given to Russia and with this a declaration that is Russian soil now. With this would come agreements that people would move west if they wanted within a timeframe etc

But!

This would be done over a long period of time with some red lines eg the rest of Ukraine can join EU and NATO.

If the Russians will not accept then the War continues. You can give an inch to these people.

It would be a fair deal. Ukraine under the protectorate of NATO and out of the political and economic reach of Russia.

If this is signed without the genuine consent of parties it will mean trouble down the line and it will increase the likelihood of further encroachment elsewhere.

Some people reckon that by sucking up to Russia he’s trying to prise them away from China. Don’t really buy it. He’s either nuts or compromised.

China will be loving this. Dismantling of USAID takes away much of their soft power in Africa giving China free rein to exploit the continent's development. There was massive Chinese investment in Ethiopia when I worked there. Already using African labour as cheaper again than China.

I tried an analogy earlier and didn't get an answer from jack123, so I'll try again with a different one:

Saying 'Stop the War' without saying what the conditions should be (Rockin has set out a scenario for peace above for example), is the equivalent of saying Britain should have surrendered/signed a peace deal with Hitler in the summer of 1940.

Wars are complex topics as you say and aren't as simple as Hollywood style 'good guys and bad guys', but I'm sure you can see that us surrendering in the summer of 1940 would have been a bad thing for the world, right?

Depending on whose side of the story, you listen to. If you listen to both sides and their arguments for war, it certainly is a complex mess.

I think there is nothing remotely wrong in saying stop the war, without attributing blame to anyone. It’s the sort of thing, I learned in the infants.

Some time later after you’ve been called on it, you start with the whole ‘I was only trying to help, I didn’t realise there was anything wrong with that, I’m just a simple man who doesn’t really understand, I’m so sorry, forgive me’.
