Walsh, Placheta and Ogbeta all released

Agree totally, right now Ronald's impact is diminished by the fact that he is our only consistent threat on the flanks which lets teams double up on him without worry that they are going to be short handed on the other side if we quickly switched play.
Let's hope Ginelly comes back undiminished.

Not looking we have much scope to add new players without pushing the wage bill up further..

This is the issue.
Out goes
Rushworth, Ashby, Humphreys, Walsh, Patino, Sagore jnr, Lowe, Placheta and possibly Pato.
Pederson the only one returning in contract from a loan.
We needed to be logical with Naughton and Allen considering what we already have available in their positions and the wages being paid out in midfield to Grimes and Fulton.

We don't have much scope this summer and the wages of Naughton and Allen combined could have brought a player in who would have been a lot younger and capable of starting come the first game of the season.

From that out list plus Joe and Kyle:
Rushworth (L) - Played every minute of every game
Ashby (L) - 13 appearances totalling 806 minutes (just under 9 full matches)
Humphreys (L) - 24 appearances totalling 1896 minutes (just over 21 full matches)
Walsh - 20 appearances totalling 553 minutes (just over 9 full matches)
Patino (L) - 33 appearances totalling 1250 minutes (less than 15 full matches)
Sagoe Jr (L) - 2 appearances totalling 25 minutes
Lowe (L) - 35 appearances totalling 2261 minutes (just over 25 full matches)
Placheta - 10 appearances totalling 669 minutes (just over 7 full matches)
Paterson - 44 appearances totalling 3243 minutes (just over 35 full matches)
Joe Allen - 19 appearances totalling 669 minutes (just over 7 full matches)
Kyle Naughton - 15 appearances totalling 761 minutes (just over 8 full matches)

Needless to say our use of the loan market this season was beyond shocking and is something that we absolutely must address this summer alongside our recruitment as an overall.

Of those players and knowing that we needed cover for left back and right back as well as an experienced head in midfield it makes sense to keep Kyle and either Joe Allen or Liam Walsh and frankly Walsh's shocking injury record raises more red flags than his obvious talent can compensate for.

At left back we have returning loan options to consider in the form of Pedersen or Tjoe-A-On which I suspect LW will run the rule over in pre season. Retaining Joe and Kyle means that we can focus our recruitment efforts on striker and goalkeeper as top priorities with our second priorities being left wing and attacking midfield.

From that list it baffles me how Naughton and Allen get extensions considering their involvement, giving they didn't play as much due to injury and will be 12 months older!

I forgot Tjoe a on!

I think the lack of involvement in your list highlights we need to trim the squad down a little.

Hopefully will be a big push on moving Wood, Yates and Pederson out for starters.

Naughton and Allen bring a wealth of experience to the squad, no doubt they'll have a huge influence both on and off the pitch.

Can imagine the wages aren't huge either, it's a no brainer for me.

This entirely.

Naughton will be under no illusions that he is cover for Key, the fact that he CAN also in a pinch cover centre half if the squad finds itself thin due to injuries is a bonus as is his ability to read the game.

In a dream world Allen would start ahead of Fulton every time but we all have to admit that age and previous injuries in his career are catching up to Joe. Ideally we will also look for a new midfielder to hand over that baton to because Fulton is not it, but for now Joe is the best we have and I wouldn't be surprised to hear that he is on a heavily appearance bonus structured deal.

Totally agree, their experience is worth its weight in gold for the younger players.

I’m guessing Naughton and Allen would have took a considerable wage drop on what they were getting to stay in the area and help the younger guys, no brainer if they took at least 50% less.

I see Ogbeta is playing at Wembley today for Bolton in the League 1 play-off final. Will be interesting to see how he plays.

When you look at the numbers for Placheta they actually make pretty dire reading.
He was with us for 20 match day rounds, only played in 11 of them and was injured for all of the last nine.
He racked up 0 goals and 1 assist (and some of the chances he missed were absolute sitters)

Placheta was all energy and pace with zero end product and that is the reality of it. If he had genuine potential then Norwich wouldn't have let him leave to us when they did.

I am sorry to see Walsh go as unlike Placheta he did have genuine skill and talent but unfortunately his injury record these past three years speaks for itself. When you missed significantly more games than you were available for over two whole years and none of them were down to any serious long term injury then the decision had to be an obvious one.

The only one I wish we had kept was Ogbeta even if it was only as backup to Tymon as a left back.

One name I was surprised to see on the list was McFayden, there was a time a couple of years back when he was being talked about as being ready for the first team but that never transpired.
I think when you look at his performances it makes sense too. We’re desperate for any positive signs, and he delivered a couple. But realistically we need much more if we want to be top half comfortably.

Ogbeta was absolutely crap for Bolton yesterday. I’ve no idea if that was a one-off, but on that showing we’re well shot of him.
