Bale and Ramsey

Sorry but Ramsey should have been on the bench. Page needs to get a grip. Team spirit will only get you so far and it’s time for him to take tough decisions.

He's had his moments no doubt, it's just his attitude whilst playing for Wales, when Wenger was managing Arsenal you rarely saw Ramsey try all tricks and flicks like he does for Wales

I've never rated him, just never seen it to be honest.

And that's nothing to do with his Cardiff connections etc, just seen him as a luxury player who has produced some good moments of skill etc, but nowhere near consistently enough to warrant his perceived greatness. Other will have a different opinion of course and rightly so.

I think if Bale was serious about competing at this World Cup, he should have joined a Championship club at the start of the season, even Scumdiff, and put in three months' hard graft in a competitive environment. More risk of injury and not going to Qatar, yes, and I think that fashioned his thinking, but hiding out in America and doing feck all for three months has done him and Wales no favours. He looks a shell of what he once was.
And don't get me started on Ransey. He shouldn't be on the field, simple as. They both know they're automatic picks with the village idiot in charge though. How the FAW has given him four more years' contract before the tournament even started is beyond belief.

With those two going plus Joey. This may well see a decline in the national team. There seems to be very little coming through that can play at top level.

Both played in the world cup , but weren't fit enough for the tournament and neither realistically played enough games in the run up to the competition. Guess they were afraid with this being the last possible chance of playing in a World Cup of getting injured, as what happened to Joe Allen. Always thought Ramsey was largely over rated for Wales, but Bale is going to be a huge miss when he retires. There are very few players in the world capable of doing what he has done for Wales over the years.

I agree they are no longer effective at this standard. Bale can still do something extraordinary once a game so can justify carrying him, but Ramsey is a shadow of himself and offers nothing to the team.

The problem is, who the hell is gonna replace these players. Joe Allen will never be as effective again with his injuries either.

Makes me concerned for the future of Welsh football. I don't see any players coming through at premier League standard let alone anything higher.

In 2016 Bale, Ramsey and Allen were still playing for elite teams and were the core of that Euro team. However, back then Wales were still able to fill their first 11 with decent Prem players like Ashley Williams, Ben Davies, Neil Taylor, Sam Vokes, Wayne Hennessy and even fairly ordinary players like Joe Ledley, HRK and James Chester were at least playing at that level too. In fact, Gunter was probably the only first choice not playing in the Prem but possibly made up for that with experience. Who are our Prem players now? Mepham? Moore? James? Johnson? Ward? The only one with any real quality is Ben Davies so qualification for Germany in 2024 and beyond that is looking less and less likely whoever the manager is.

Looking to the future of Welsh football is a little concerning - I thought that it was shocking that Ward was ditched for Hennessey the moment he was back from injury after he had worked wonders to see us through the end of qualifying and it would have done him no favours.

When you look at defence we have never truly replaced the commanding presence at the back of Ash, Rodon and Cabango have potential but still have a long way to go (Ben especially who has a big mistake in him every other game). Ben Davies is well covered by Nico Williams though Page is hardly using a formation to get the best out of his attacking wingbacks while Roberts doesn't have any real successor yet, though admittedly he has a good few years left in him yet.

Midfield we enjoyed Allen and Ramsey when at the height of their powers, however both are now getting on and we need to blood and groom their successors which Page has not really done very well. Ethan Ampadu gets a lot of praise but every time I watch him I am unconvinced, his positional awareness is often lacking. Attacking midfield in particular is a concern, Harry Wilson is a poor man's Ramsey but might yet grow into that role, Ollie Cooper should have been in the squad but that's another topic for another time.

Up front we have Moore who is our only real striker, Dan James and Brendan Johnson the only real wingers we are offering. We are desperate for depth and need to work hard to find those players and develop them with a view towards the next 6 to 8 years of international football. We are in real danger of this being a golden generation without succession planning leading to a fall into competitive obscurity a la Cameroon from the 90s.

I agree with that except to say that Dan James looks a busted flush, to much to soon perhaps, I don't know and Johnson lacks desire for me, Bale had to to tell him in USA game to keep running saying I know its hard, but keep going, fuk my eyes a young boy playing in a World Cup game needing to be told that, I'd have bust a lung at that age if I'd been lucky enough to have been in that position.

a little reminder of what Ben Woodburn can do for Wales.
yet we take league 2 players to the world cup, why? Because they're silly beards can brighten up the changing room. Mental.....

The lack of Welsh players is even more concerning to me. All the players mentioned to take over for the next campaign are English born lads. This can't keep being our go to strategy. By default these players will only play for us if they aren't good enough to play for England.

We will never be able to compete seriously unless we can produce Welsh players that are able to play in the best leagues in the world.

Maybe a debate for another day but the lack of top quality players to come out of the Welsh clubs academies is really poor.

We can hope Brooks comes back stronger than he was before his illness - by no means inconceivable. The Harris kid at Fulham scores bags of goals from midfield, albeit only at u23 level - but he is only 17. What we lack is a quality 6 and/or 8. Joe and to a lesser extent Ledley are the only decent ones we’ve had since Speed. A decent goalscorer would also be nice - we seemed to produce a steady flow of above average strikers in the 80s and 90s but the cupboard’s been bare for a long time.
