Well he seemed to forget almost immediately that Truss had sacked Braverman just a couple of weeks before he took over and gave her the job back which she took as a green light to run roughshod over all human decency.

Cameron called the referendum because he wanted to put the ERG, UKIP & other nutters back in their box and he never imagined for one minute that the leave vote would win so as he didn't make a super majority part of the deal, he royally f*cked up.

I’m not defending Cameron but, from what I remember, he was a remainer and thought a referendum would put Brexit to bed completely. He misjudged the dense British public who voted for Brexit.
