Execution in America

Interestingly I was having a read around the interweb earlier and discovered that there have been 14 executions in the last 20 years all under a Republican administration,3 under Bush and 11 under Trump, all 11 under Trump have been in the last six months.

That's federal executions, state executions are still fairly common. There were 17 last year, one of them by electric chair in Tennessee

Oh right I see. Got a list?

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_offenders_executed_in_the_United_States_in_2020

It would be interesting to know how many of the states that still carry out capital punishment are republican governed

Edit. The 17 executions in 2020 were state and federal combined actually (7 state, 10 federal). 2019 had 22 executions, all state level. The reason for the low amount of state executions in 2020 was Covid

Covid saves lives.

Every state execution in 2019 and 2020 was carried out under a republican governor.

If every defence and appeal is exhausted, then a death sentence should be done within a day, having that hang over you for 20 years, is in my opinion, is almost just as big of a human rights horror.

The Trump administration is corrupt as it is bloodthirsty. The world will be a better place on Wednesday.

And the guy who did the killing got life. Barbaric and arbitrary justice system akin to some illiberal theocracy like Iran or Saudi Arabia.

An Indictment of the state of the 'health service' in America. People don't seek it out cos they can't afford it. She had brain damage and was schizophrenic. There is a reason they have a very long history of insane murderers.

My friend from NY says her five reasons to leave the USA were health, justice, education, welfare and crime.
I’d imagine your friend , lives in one of the big cities, where gangs are killing each other every day. The vast majority of America is perfectly safe, and has a way of life better than this country

Very simple really - you don’t want to get the death penalty, well don’t go around killing people then.

Except that last statement is not true. US has a higher per capita GDP which ranks it higher than the U.K. in some lists of quality of life, but more (including the UN) put the U.K. higher. Quality of life is better in many European countries including Germany and Netherlands, New Zealand and Australia. Nor would my experience suggest this is the case, given the huge inequality and gap between rich and poor. Something we are clearly trying to achieve here too.

Well I don’t agree. I spend a lot of time in America and step outside the big urban centres and the way of life is fantastic and extremely safe.

Safe yes. But vast poverty in many rural areas. Small farmers have suffered badly due to Trump policies
