Whilst I'm relieved that Macron won, I'm shocked that 40% voted for the extreme right wing. How France has changed. Where is the spirit of 68? What the hell has happened to the political left?
I think the worldwide populist wave has a way to go yet and I fear for the future of the world. Most of all I fear the return of the Chump in two years time. The Americans are as dumb as soup.

The way I understand it, the leading left-wing candidate (Melenchon?) came third in the initial round of voting so didn't make it to yesterday. I don't think he was that far behind Le Pen.

Then some of his voters refused to vote yesterday, some switched to Macron to keep Le Pen out, but some dislike Macron so much that they switched to Le Pen.

Seems a strange electoral system to me, but not like we can claim ours is any better.

I know a group of people living in the suburbs of Paris that I’ve met many times over the years through Cheap Trick.
One of them,Andre is a gendarme and he tells me that even though every single one of the immigrants has crossed the channel and come here it’s absolutely horrific out there.
He says the crime and incidents that go unreported are incredible.

We need politicians that are prepared to do something but do something humane.

My friend in Paris made a couple of observations last week.
Macron not liked, seen by many as part of the elite establishment, living standards are declining fast in France. France's debt third to the US and Japan, running at 120 percent of GDP.
Yellow vest type protests likely to return, parts of Paris and other cities becoming impossible to Police.
Electoral turnout likely to be low, people feel politics is failing.
Some of le Pens policies more left wing than Macron.

There’s a very fine line between far right and far left. At times it’s almost indistinguishable, increasingly so with the worldwide rise in simplistic populism. You only have to read the various Swans forums to see that in how much people on both “sides” often coalesce around certain issues, especially where populist issues and the more outlandish conspiracy theories are concerned.

I think simplistic applies to a lot of political consideration these days. The vast amount of information pushed at us these days seems to lead to less discussion, debate and analysis.

I agree. That’s how populist leaders have thrived throughout history. Simplistic solutions to complex problems, usually demonising a group or groups of people at the same time.
