January Transfer Rumours

I think it’s a bit of a myth that modern players cover more ground than players from previous eras.

You can argue pressing and transitions, may have evolved, the overall physical output in terms of distance covered hasn’t drastically changed.

Players are far more protected these days so you could say the physical toll is also a lot less than it has been. It’s also worth noting that modern pitches are generally in better condition

The game might look faster today, it doesn’t necessarily mean players are working harder overall.
Its not a myth at all, I did some research and analysis on it in another thread last year

The average professional football player now covers about 60% more ground, plays almost double the amount of games (if international and european football calendars are taken into account) and makes about 40% more sprints / hi intensity actions per 90 minutes compared to a player from the 80s.

Ok, if that's what the data is telling us then that is what the data is saying. It still doesn't mean the demands of the game are any greater.

In previous eras it was a lot harder in terms of physicality, tougher playing conditions, and less medical and technological support.

Players these days are far more protected on and off the pitch.

Try working in a factory for 70hrs a week for minimum wage to put food on the table and pay the mortgage and bills.
Professional footballers have a privileged life whatever standard they play. If they have to do 60% more running around than players from years gone by (most on minimum wage)then tough shit. If they don't like the extra effort they have to put in with modern day football the solution is easy, get a job in a factory...

Talk about missing the point

Modern day footballers have everything at their disposal to achieve anything they want to in the game.
Technology, science, fitness have all come on so much that the only thing footballers have to do is actually want it.
Far too many players chase the coin (coin, coin coin) and put their own achievements second.
It amazes me that will everything on offer to them, footballers - and in some cases our players can't seem to motivate themselves to be up for a game.

"...neither mastery nor satisfaction can be found in the playing of any game without giving some attention to the relatively neglected skills of the inner game. This is the game that takes place in the mind of the player, and it is played against such obstacles as lapses in concentration, nervousness, self-doubt, and self-condemnation." Timothy Gallwey, 'The Inner Game of Tennis' (1974)

Go on then, talk about it.
No-one's denying that working actual jobs is hard, nor are footballers underpaid or overworked. The original post was noting that more football being played is likely to lead to more injuries, which is a scientific fact. It's such a strange argument to raise - you're not the only person to raise it - that because people work hard in our day-to-day lives, footballers should be somehow exempt from injuries or tiredness.

Not going any further because I started this post to chat about Jan transfer rumours, and 20 pages later, we've had about 6 messages on topic.

Well well well...... A rumour at last!
cant say I've noticed him play, but experienced at this level. got to wonder why he'd leave blackburn for us mind.
Read a few of their fans saying he's has a few attitude problems sometimes. Lets hope its not another Obafemi situation if it comes off

6 months left on his deal and we're eyeing a bid, can't imagine he's desperate to stay at Rovers if he hasn't signed a new deal
