He was a development coach at Liverpool. He’s worked almost exclusively with age group football until very recently.

If they appoint him I’m sure we will hope for the best and be fully supportive but to say it’s a gamble is a massive understatement. It’s verging on the club buying a raffle ticket. Could win but far more likely to be a waste of money.

Managers need to be given an opportunity at some point. If we do appoint him, I won't be writing him off before one of his teams has kicked a ball.

But I guarantee most know more about championship football than the vast, vast majority of Americans. Largely because we’ve actually watched it. Until a couple of seasons ago it wasn’t even available to watch in the US outside the odd game.

In fairness, Steve Cooper had only ever worked in age group football too and not even at club level.

I hated Cooperball but he was successful and knew what he was doing

Funnily enough, whereas club football tends to be of a far higher standard than international football, the one area where international football probably gives a massive advantage is at age group level.

Anyway, it is what it is. We’ll all hope for the best.

Even if he had been Klopp's right-hand man, it wouldn't be any indication of whether he'd succeed or not. Pep Lijnders really was in that role and he lasted 29 games at Red Bull Salzburg before being sacked (Matos was his assistant at RBS and was sacked along with Lijnders).

Any appointment is a gamble, but we could be going from one inexperienced manager to someone with 11 games of managerial experience in the Portuguese second tier. It's a bold move to say the least.

None of us will be.

But don’t pretend he is anything other than a ‘oh shit, our target has turned us down’ appointment.

It’s an enormous gamble and one that clearly is inconsistent with off field aspirations.

Yeah because the premier league and champions league definitely has the same level of exposure as the championship globally.

Smurph, if someone has managed 11 games of football, they are by definition an inexperienced manager. It doesn't really come down to perception.

I think we can all agree Sheehan was considered an inexperienced manager when we made him permanent in the summer and he'd managed almost double the amount of games Matos had over his two caretaker spells (20).
