“We were punished for our mistakes and moments where we were not good enough,” said the Swans head coach.

“We had a good period in the second half and should have scored, and their second goal is a sucker punch.

“We wanted to be quicker with the ball, but they put loads of men deep in their half and any team would struggle to break that down.

“We have to do a bit of work on that, but I said a couple of weeks ago that how we react to mistakes or difficult moments will define that we do, and it defined it today.

“For the first goal we make a mistake, and then we follow it up with another mistake to allow the guy back into the middle of the pitch.

“We cannot follow one mistake with another.

“We certainly wanted more from the first half, we felt we were started to find ways to open things up towards the end of the half and then we had good energy at the start of the second half. We had chances, the crowd was willing us on and then we concede.

“It can’t happen and that comes down to anxiety and not being able to manage the moment and we were punished.

“We have to make more of the periods where we are on top. We know what we need to work on, and we have to continue to work hard and improve and keep believing.

“It’s a long season and I have no doubts about what this group of players is capable of.”

Make of that what you will...

Bollocks after more than enough previous bollocks.

I have no doubts about what the players are capable of, but that can't be said of you Mr Martin, Clueless springs to mind.

Well he could start by not playing Lati as a wingback when we have a few people capable of actually playing right wingback in the squad (Sorinola, Joseph has also played the position) - or if he isn't happy with the wingbacks we have on offer stop trying to play 5-3-2 and play with conventional fullbacks.

Also Fulton offered absolutely nothing for three halves of football since the season started.

It wasn't a lack of effort today," added the Swans boss. "The way we play isn't always going to please everyone. I think pretty much everyone out of Swansea hates it because they're desperate to stop it and beat it.

"Even a few comments from their bench towards it tells me the mentality towards it because we dare to try and control things and pass the ball. That's their prerogative. Ours is to try and control and improve people, bring the best version of ourselves.

"I really admire the lads sticking to it when it did get a little bit tetchy. I understand that.

"Expectancy has gone up from last season, we've had more time to work with the players. We need to stick together, work really hard and try to find solutions to the problems we faced today."

When asked if it was a criticism of Swansea's play, the head coach responded: "Yeah or an opinion of us as people which really doesn’t bother me because they don’t know me one bit, but it’s what you get when you play a certain way, a certain style of football here in the Championship.

“We have to make sure we are successful. Everyone is entitled their opinion on football, right. If someone likes a different style of football to me, I don’t have an opinion on that, especially if I don’t know them.

“Everyone’s entitled to do what they want to do, but for some reason the way we do it really p***** people off.”

I think everyone in Swansea is starting to hate it too.

Most people inside of Swansea hate it too Russ..... excuse after excuse

I couldn’t believe we was 2-0 down and was still pissing around doing nothing with the ball, the stubbornness is getting ridiculous now, I gave him the benefit of the doubt, I get it’s two games in but if it’s like this by the end of August then we really need to look at our options.

No shit Sherlock just like every team we play they stand off watching up play tippy tappy possession football at the back, no threat, risk averse, possession for the sake of possession football then wait till we make a mistake, capitalise, counter attack and score.

Rinse and repeat FFS wake up you clown what the F have you been doing with these players over the past 3 months 🤔🤔🤔

No many options that's the problem

Congreve has to get a run, obviously raw but at least he looks make things happen, he's going places this kid (as long as Russ doesn't coach his spontaneity out of him)

This is literally insane. He is so up his own ego it’s unreal. We are a bog standard boring team that plays 20 passes in the centre circle for the sake of it. We don’t ‘dare to control things’ we mess about to little effect until we concede a stupid goal. He has to wake up and change something.

I don’t think we’ve ever had a manager give a stranger post game interview than that.

Carlos had a few…

Possession is great, but there has to be a point where that position has to be turned into opportunities.

Right now teams know they can sit tight and defend deep in numbers and know we will give away a defensive howler or two at some point in the game and they just need to be ready to take that chance we put on a plate for them.

We might look good for perhaps 5-10 minutes of a game where we put sides under real pressure but that aside we will often look slow and predictable which suits the opposition right down to the ground. If RM loves stats then you only need to look at the past six games where we have had the ball sometimes three or four times as much as the other team but given up more shots and goals over those six games as we have created ourselves.

ML described it perfectly when he took over from Rodgers that possession has to come with penetration. Keeping the ball for its own sake means nothing.
