Absolutely. Otherwise we’re no better than those regimes that silence any opposition. Freedom from discrimination on the grounds of religion (as nutty as they are) is a cornerstone of our democracy.

Equally he could choose not to sign for a team that has a betting company as a sponsor. Or her could be like those players in France who refused to wear rainbow kits a few years ago (Gueye of Everton was one of them), meaning they didn't play in those games.

I absolutely support his decision not to wear the armband, it has to be an individual choice or it's a meaningless gesture. However, by wearing a shirt with a better sponsor he has certainly opened himself up to being called a hypocrite, picking and choosing which aspects of his religion matter to him. Or he could actually be a homophobe, who knows?

James McLean gets hammered for not wearing a poppy, but he's always willing to explain his reasoning when asked about it (as was Matic when playing for Man United). Morsy and Ahmedhodzic of Sheffield United duck the question when asked why they choose not to wear the armband, meaning they're also pretty cowardly.

Looking at the history of religion, most religious types are pontificating self righteous hypocrites, or total fuckwits, or both. Expecting Morsy to be different is optimistic.

Lots of assumptions there. I don’t know the bloke, so don’t feel in a position to speak for him. I imagine it’s pretty hard to avoid betting in football. And who knows whether those sponsors were in place when he signed 2-3 years ago. But, as I say, who knows (and frankly who cares).

Just to add though, I don’t agree with his stance and think the more extreme Muslim views develop against LGBTQ+ is disgusting. But agree he has the right to chose to not support the cause.

Just highlights the hypocrisy of religion.

Player won't wear a rainbow armband due to religious beliefs yet is ok with wearing a shirt sponsor who make money from gambling which is also against the players chosen religious belief.
