You don’t have to have the cage, but then the larger birds and squirrels chase away the smaller ones. I have one caged and one without. I also put seeds in to a caged feeder so the smaller birds are able to get something.Edit: to Muteswan re: cage feeder. .
My only reservation with something like that is the small birds become jailbirds if an apex predator rocks up and waits for them.
But the sloped base is exactly what I think will work.
