The Glammy 2022 thread

Lukas Carey, Ruaidhri Smith, Joe Cooke, James Weighell and Tom Cullen will all leave Glamorgan at the end of the current season.

Cullen can just about do a job, the rest are just stealing a living at County level, also, perhaps Huw Morris should look a his position after many years of mismanagement, and overseeing a "jobs for the boys" culture at GCCC.
Also, the "committee's relentless pursuit of securing the odd ODI rather than invest in a decent squad should be questioned...

I must admit I’m surprised at some of these. The reason being that we’ve continued with them for years with the odd performance seemingly making the persistence worthwhile. Weighell kept getting picked this season and I couldn’t understand why? I wonder if this marks the start of a more brutal selection regime than we have seen over the years at Glamorgan and frankly, when I think about it, I reckon it’s justified. I suppose we’ll have to wait and see what reinforcements we make. Clearly we need a strike bowler to replace hoges and we probably need another one too. Another England qualified batsman in the ilk of northeast wouldn’t go amiss either and then we have a side.

But hey ho, 6 out of 7 dwarfs ain’t happy!

Some absolute dross being culled which is good to see.
We need to recruit far more wisely.

Absolutely 💯
Need to cull some dross in the committee room now Dicky, Morris needs to step down (he won't) and employ a younger, forward thinking CEO that will look beyond attracting the odd ODI to Cardiff Central.

Also, I think Maynard's time has run it's course, plenty of South African, Australian coaches out there who can come in with fresh eyes to shake things up a bit...

Carey took 83 wickets in three and a bit seasons under Croft and had a pretty good habit of getting early batsmen out yet Maynard gave him four championship games in his time in charge whilst continuing to persue a bizarre selection policy.Big changes are needed at the club from top to bottom. Maynard should never have been given job second time. It is crying out for outside coaching set up to go through playing staff.Cullen should never had been released at this time.

I dunno if I’m out the loop here. I feel like we’re improving albeit slowly. What’s the issue with morris and Maynard? I’m not baiting, I just don’t know if I’ve missed something. Surely if we’re to compete with the richer counties we have to strive to attract as much international cricket to Cardiff as possible. That’s the cash cow that will allow us, Glamorgan I mean, to build a squad capable of challenging for trophies. Isn’t this the strongest we’ve been for years?

I think the fact Hogan and now Labuschagne are happy here speaks volumes for Maynard.
We just need 3 or 4 class players to take the side to higher levels

When Glamorgan (under Morris) decided to refurbish Sofia Gardens it was purely to attract Test and ODI matches to Cardiff, they had to borrow 6 million off Cardiff City Council to do so, this resulted in Glamorgan being unable to repay the debt, and CCC having to write off 4 million of this amount to keep Glamorgan afloat.
County sides also have to bid for the right to stage Test and ODI matches, not sure how much it is now but in 2011 it was 2 million pounds, this has to be made back via takings at the venue, attendances especially for Test matches at Sofia Gardens have been disappointing.

Maynard, in my opinion, has done a fair job, but Glamorgan have hardly pulled up and trees under his leadership.
So, in my opinion, a new forward thinking CEO and a young enthusiastic coach to come in, and less money spent on bidding for Test and ODI's, and more finances directed towards team strengthening would be a start.

Fair enough, some of this I’m simply unaware of. I don’t understand why it would cost 2 million quid to bid for international cricket though! What’s the 2 million spent on exactly?

Agreed, we haven’t kicked the arse off it since Maynard has been coach but I think we’re making progress albeit at a slow rate.

My view is that we have to keep striving for international cricket to support a gradual improvement in our squad. That said, I wasn’t aware we were spending 2 million to get it so, as I say to many people, there’s every chance I’m talking out me arse!

I should imagine it would go into the ECB coffers, regarding striving for international cricket at Sofia Gardens to support a gradual improvement in Glamorgans squad, that would be a stretch considering Morris had to go cap in hand to CCC to write off 4 million pounds worth of debts only two years after the referb, basically, they are losing money on Tests especially, which makes it all the more absurd that they still "put in" for them...

This is from 2011, can't find anything more recent but counties still have to bid for the right to hold Test and ODI matches, and probably considerably more the 2M nowadays...

"As they always tend to, England fans across the country will question why Lord's is allowed to host two Tests each year every year for the next five years, especially as The Oval is also due to host six Test matches in that time. Cardiff will be a controversial choice for an Ashes venue, especially after the depressing Test against Sri Lanka this summer, which drifted aimlessly through four damp days on a lifeless pitch before coming to a spectacular conclusion in front of a crowd of only 922 spectators. Glamorgan have already had to hand back next season's Test against West Indies, which has been reallocated to Lord's. Like Hampshire, they have been forced to ask the ECB for a time extension for the payment of the staging fees from their Test this summer."
