I think tonight showed for the first time that the RM process could actually work.. if we could protect the ball better in the final 3rd and stop overplaying from the back, especially that last 15 minutes in which we almost had a few brain farts.. it could work out... And Obafemi gets better and better every game he plays, you can see why he played at a higher level with Southampton

Excellent post.

Yes skippy... I've been critical of the process because it felt like we were going backwards at times but credit where its due it looks like we've turned a corner and the process is back on track. Happy to be proved wrong as all I want is the team and club to succeed.

He’s not reinventing football. They’ve started to move after passing and not always passing backwards but looking to attack and get bodies forward. Should have happened months ago. Great to see, but Process, my arse.

Let's not get too carried away. The euphoria after Saturday is understandable but there's every chance that Derby on Saturday could be a turgid affair when they park the bus and attempt to hit us on the break for a 0-1 away win.

RM still has square pegs in round holes, his words not mine, and the next transfer window is extremely important in terms of getting players who are more adept at playing the system.

Last night was a far better performance than the one on Saturday. First time I can recall that we coped with a team constantly pressing us high without gifting loads of silly chances. Our one touch passing was a delight at times.

For those banging on about the process or have hitched their wagon to the Martin train despite not a lot of evidence it was going very well, these performances will be seen as justification in that faith.

For those somewhat more skeptical, I suspect it'll take a bit longer to be convinced.

Either way, I'm sure we'll all be happy if it carries on in this manner.

Agreed.

Either Martin's system has got some real differences to how we played under Martinez/Rodgers, or teams have adapted how they counter a system like ours. I remember most teams would let us have the ball until almost the halfway line, confident we couldn't hurt them if we were passing the ball between our defenders. Then they would press in their own half. It was why the likes of Dyer and Sinclair were so important, as they both had the ability to go past players on their own (although Dyer's partnership with Rangel was a big help).

Now teams seem much happier to press us right up to our penalty area. Is this an influence of Klopp's gegenpressing? Someone with more knowledge of tactics than me may know. It puts incredible strain on all our players and it must be so difficult to play that way for 90 minutes without making mistakes.

I think it's clear that it comes far more naturally to some of our players to play this way than others, but even those who seem to find it a challenge did well last night. I'm thinking of Fulton and Cabango in particular.

I'm sure there'll be a downturn of form before the end of the season, but matching Potter's season total of 65 points is looking very achievable now.

We've had 2 wins on the spin let's not get overexcited. The ''Process '' was in place against Brum and we should have slaughtered. Against Fulham we were. Against some teams we may get a good performance others not so. Derby have to come to us Saturday and have a go and win. Let's see.

Sorry Coops, but get it right v Derby it could be a cricket score. Literally point of no return for them, they have to win. They'll come at us....they've no choice not too.

The brum game was on the back of 6 games in 20 days plus we had paterson and downes missing.

I think if derby come and have a go it will play right into our hands, we have a full squad to pick from so we have decent options off the bench.

I have to disagree with you there, after the turgid, negative and pragmatic football these players had been drilled into playing the previous 2 seasons, where we could barely string 3 passes together, it's quite a process to get to where we are now... everyone comfortable on the ball, playing the ball out from the back, stringing 20+ passes together - and when it works - attacking with pace with lots of movement... for me that's hell of a process... no one has said he's reinventing football, but it's a long way to come from where we were.

I've been as highly critical as anyone on here after matches where we tried to implement 'the Process' but it didn't work because we shot ourselves in the foot with silly defensive errors. Almost all trying to play out from the back.

I knew it COULD work, I saw it away at WBA, but last night was so much better because Millwall were far stronger than Steve Bruce's team and really tried to press us. The boys coped with it superbly. If we can keep developing this style and bring in two or three good lads in the summer, we'll be in with a shout. Hanging on to our star players - Piroe, Obafemi, Downes - will be a measure of the owners' intent. Replacing Wolf and Christie will be a big task too, but I like the look of Ogbeta from what I've seen of him. Looks like we have some good youngsters coming through, too.

We are extremely capable of handing out a four or five goal tuning, we did it on Saturday

I think it’s as much about how the opposition sets up as much as anything else. We have struggled for some time to break down teams which park the bus, Pato has been a key component in changing this but he can’t play every game and won’t perform. Will Derby attempt Fast Free Flowing Football, I guess we’ll find out come 3pm Saturday.

We are almost at the point of the annually asked question of wether we can keep certain players. We have a strong finish to our season and Russ is not backed by the owners, then he'll be off and wer back to square one. The owners must shirley realise that we've hit the bar twice in 2 years now and that backing this guy will possibly see us challenge next year. Wether he is still the right man.....I'm still little doubtful, but we are seemingly improving. Could be a case of backing him rather than continuously starting again.
