What are we really expecting from Matos....

From what I see we have a much stronger squad this season to last season not so much a better starting 11 .

Compare the team /subs against West Brom this season to last where we had Allen, Biachini, Fulton , Abdulai, Lloyd , McClaughlin. , Naughton , Peart - Harris,
T. Joe a on . On the bench .

Starting the season i thought we would be OK , the doubt was would we score enough goals .
We haven't scored or created to be a top 10 team .
The fact we haven't scored more than 2 in League games shows our weakness.
Scoring 2 in only 7 games is a concern to which Matos his coaches and recruitment to address going forward .
Many posters have said 1 good transfer window will not be enough .

Top half would be awful this season?! On what basis would that be?

Our squad value is around 12th in the league, we spent this summer but the squad was down the absolute bare bones. Wrexham paid more for two players than we did on our whole summer aswell. No way would top 6 have been demanded by those in power and rightly so, completely ununrealistic.

I remember in Montagues first interview at the club he said success is measured by overperforming where should be in the league in terms of budget/wages.

Your right I'd estimate us to be anywhere from 9th-14th budget/wage wise. However I dont see us finishing as high as that this season so in their eyes this season has been a complete failure and therefore an awful season.

For some I could be classed as a moderate happy clapper, a mid-septuagenarian who has witnessed the ups and down of the football club since 1961 but for the life of me I am struggling to come to terms following criticism of our new head coach.

For a club that is in the bottom percentile of cash entering the club, for me the results since Matos’s appointment has been remarkable given the short time he has had on the training ground let alone almost working on his own to present day.

By all means vent one’s spleen at our previous and current owners if blame needs to be addressed regarding shit on and off the field appointments but a failure to recognise how fiercely competitive the Championship has become this season where even Oxford – a shit team mentioned by some – are capable of beating Ipswich and a resurgent Southampton on a good day.

Right through the club post relegation from the PL we are desperate for some semblance of stability and the ongoing retention of responsible staff whether they be Head Coaches, Chairmen, Head of Recruitment or Academy staff. Is it any wonder there are so many below par performances when not only the playing squad but also the Head Coach have almost needed to be rebuilt every summer or in mid-season.

I like this thread. It’s full of old codgers making me feel sprightly and young. Splendid.

I think we'll finish between those places. So not over peforming, just par for the course, another summer window then where the expectation will be to get top half then play off contention in the next couple of seasons.

Delighted with Matos so far, partly because of results and partly because he has a clear vision of how we should play which seems sustainable (apart from questions about the work rate's effect on the players).

He can only do so much to improve players and it's hard to argue that we've done well in the transfer market in recent times. Wide players is a good example, we've signed so many players (Ronald, Eom, Inoussa, Benson, Bianchini, etc) and yet none of them have been an unqualified success.

10 games have passed and I like him a lot. In a season with no favourites, I’ll go for top half or even fighting for a playoff place.

Yes, and as I've previously mentioned, I also included the games against WBA and Derby, marches where Matos cannot reasonably have been expected to have any kind of impact at all.

But I get it. Some people like looking for negatives.
We’ve played ten games if you include Derby, not nine as you said. Which is why I assumed you’d not included it (which as I say, would be fine for the reasons you said).

But it’s not ‘looking for negatives’ so point out that extrapolating results for a series of games where four of the five wins were Oxford twice, West Brom, Portsmouth , all of whom are below us, isn’t going to give you an accurate reflection of how a season would go.

Matos’ games so far (the 9 that you have mentioned) just happen to have included 5 games against teams lower than us and 4 against teams higher. Given there are 16 teams above us and only 7 below us, that’s not an accurate reflection of a whole season.

As I’ve said, I think Matos is doing well, but I remember you being similarly enthused about extrapolating results for Sheehan not so long ago.
