Interesting post on Vital Swans: we have the second highest net spend in the Championship this transfer window, at -£11.85m. Only Wrexham have spent more (net) at -£34.1m. As the poster says, we must have some serious commercial deals lined up to be OK with FFP. Overall we are sixth in the table for spend, behind Ipswich, Southampton, Wrexham, Boro and Norwich.
@Martyn makes a great observation earlier about the different approaches taken by us and Wrexham.
Both have been really bold, and that can only be good for Wales and Welsh football in particular.
However, as business models Wrexham are reliant on Disney dollars and the interest of owners that are innovative and engaged in marketing a dream. Living this side of the pond it is incredibly clear how fickle people are in how fast today's hot property becomes tomorrow's irrelevance.
Of course the same can be said of us (to a lesser extent) - but our project feels very different. It is led by genuine football people, solid structures are in place for scouting and recruitment - and most importantly the profile of player being recruited is way different.
We seem to be loading up on assets all over the pitch. Not every player will catch fire, but it seems clear that the age profile suggests we have assets that can potentially have a high profit/resale and further support the ongoing finances. Our marketing connections are also growing worldwide to drive further revenue.
Wrexham are running with the choke full out - signing ageing proven players on high wages that will have zero resale value. They are literally paying money for a short term fix and then dumping them. Talented players, but in financial terms - clear liabilities.
IF (as I expect) Wrexham are mid table and not threatening promotion, interest will start to drop and then the operating expenses become a mill stone with no opportunity to sell assets to right the ship.
I know I am biased - but I feel confident that our model is bold but sustainable.
I echo the sentiments of others on here - from the bottom of my heart THANK YOU to the ownership and management that are finally steering us back in a positive direction.
Could be a hell of a ride.
