It doesn’t need a study to tell you if you slow down a 1ton lump of metal by 10mph, that it will cause less damage to flesh and bones, or other lumps of metal.

Great news that accidents, this can only be a good thing.

Just out of interest have they split the data between 20mph and 30mph roads or are they reporting the data combined?

Good question, if you look at the road collisions dashboard link.( in blue)There is data there for the last 7 years, so would take a bit of finding but it should be there. There are drop downs for the various speed limits etc.

Had a very quick look and it appears they've combined the data rather than split 20mph and 30mph, I could be would be happy to be wrong.

Me being cynical would suggest they've done this for a reason.

That was my initial thought, I'll have to have a closer look.

I could be wrong and have to admit I've not drilled down in to the granular detail.

Wouldn't surprise me if it is combined. That lot in Cardiff don't make things easy for themselves.

Well it does of they're trying to prove that accidents have been reduced because of the introduction of the 20mph speed limit.

As far as we now all the reductions could be on the those roads with 30mph limits.

They have combined the 20 and 30 mph roads. Interesting note that there were 837 miles (or maybe kms) of 20 mph and that has grown to 13000 miles (or kms). There has been a something like 24% drop in fatalities/serious casualties comparing q3 in 2023 and 2024.
A caveat that there has been a downward trend for over ten years and also the figure was still higher than q3 2019.
Any reduction in fatalities has to seen as a positive.
I still think that many roads, in appropriate location, should be returned to 30 though.

Numbers are numbers. It’s only one year so too early to say how much of a lasting impact the 20mph default will have but this is a significantly positive sign. As I’ve said throughout the thread, driving slower means fewer collisions , fewer deaths and fewer injuries. It’s just obvious.

There’s nothing dishonest about it, it says exactly what it is. Might help if you actually read it like. Just a thought.

You make a valid point. I would have preferred to see only the data on roads which have gone from 30 to 20 mph, that would be more telling as to the success of the scheme, it's rather pointless to include other roads as this skews the data. I dont see how anyone can argue otherwise.
