January Transfer Rumours

I understand why a world where Premier League clubs recruit PhDs from Oxbridge to their data analytics departments feels alienating. But it ain't going away. In fact it will only intensify with time.
It's not alienating to us though. It's just bollocks.

- Stats = Facts, objective facts

- Eyeballs = Subjective, wholly dependent on the FQ (Football Intelligence) of the eye beholder

- So, it’s as clear as day that many online fans have minimal FQ and a bit squinty eyes - most certainly not the best barometer when assessing football stuff
Stop insulting the majority of this thread because we don't agree with you. Shows your minimal IQ.
PS how is an "expected" assist an actual fact ??? You shoot yourself in the foot everytime you comment as you contradict yourself more than a politician.

The reality is if a player had good data or played well when viewed with the naked eye (or both), then we couldn't afford him!
True. But that doesn't mean you can't meet a lot of your criteria using data, coupled with scouting and finding out about a player's personality. If you pay modest fees you won't get the full package up front, but you hope you can develop the missing qualities, and at the very least that he delivers on the existing qualities.

Ronald is a good example. He's got a terrific work ethic in and out of possession, and with his 6 assists already this season (joint 3rd best) is delivering on goal creation. But he's still more miss than hit on his delivery, and his decision making is suspect. I suspect that he won't improve much, but even so I think he's good value for his 2 million odd fee, even if he doesn't improve.

Whilst I too think that lots of these stats are "arse dribble" like you, there is definitely some room to consider them.

If a winger is consistently putting balls into the box that a competent striker would be expected to finish but the strikers he's playing with are crap, then the player in question is likely to have very few assists.

Equally, if the balls into the box are crap but he's playing with a really good striker who can somehow turn the crap balls into goals (I suppose he could be freakishly good in the air), he'll have a decent amount of assists, despite being crap.

My view has always been that the stats are probably great to bring players to our attention that may not otherwise be on our radar however they then need to be watched properly to ascertain whether the stats match the eyes.

I think most people would agree that using your eyes, Tymon is a good crosser of the ball. The expected assists stat that someone has quoted backs this up. Obviously that doesn't tell you he's shit at defending, though.

The beauty with Ronald is that he gets into good positions pretty often. I guess at the level we are currently at it doesn't matter if you have a player who gets into good positions three times a game and gets an assist from that position once every 15 times (i.e. 1 assist every 5 games) or a player who gets into good positions once every game and gets an assist from that position once every 5 times he gets there (i..e. also 1 assist every 5 games).

Our they could just go to a game and use their eyes.
Like Peter Taylor used to. He used to go back to Clough and say 'I've found one' and Clough used to go round their house, charm the family and refuse to leave until they sign.

I miss proper football.

Stats, my arse. Everyone has them and is a slave to them. This is how you miss the hidden gems.

He makes lots of great runs, but the ball goes back to grimes instead. He must be pretty fed up.

Yep. Any numpty can paint by numbers, not many can be an artist.

I’ve no idea wtf that’s got to do with football, but there may be an analogy in there somewhere 🤣

Spot on. And to be fair scouting still plays a big part in the recruitment process, usually the latter stages, as stats can't give the full picture. Stats are invaluable in narrowing the field, and underlying stats can help identify undervalued talent that the obvious stats such as goals and assists don't reveal. For instance, a striker may score relatively few goals, but if their goals tally exceeds their expected tally by a big margin that suggests they're a clinical finisher, and may flourish in a team that creates loads of opportunities.

Again, spot on. Ronald is very inefficient and needs to learn not to constantly put crosses in regardless of the quality of the opportunity. But he does generate enough quality overall to produce a good level of chances, as demonstrated by his assists tally. He is to Swansea City what a bunch of monkeys, with typewriters, are to the works of Shakespeare. Give them eternity and they'll get there in the end.

Wycombe manager is favourite for the Luton job, wouldn’t surprise me if he gets the job and brings him along, won’t be much of a commute either.
Wycombe train in Harlington which isn't much further from Suffolk than Luton.
