Daniel Farke post Millwall on Friday's game

Source: Norwich Official Site

Norwich now face Swansea City who are second in the Championship on Friday night, but the boss says he and the team will be treating it like every other match.

“We’re not too carried away. It’s not a final or something like this. Swansea could concentrate on the game for the whole week. For us it’s third third game in six days and difficult away travel because the fixture was moved to Friday for TV.

“We can’t choose so no complaints about this. We have to be smart in our recovery now and I want my team to show the same attitude in terms of resilience and show some steel in order to grind out a result over there.

“I like this mentality to stay unbeaten. I guarantee if we stay unbeaten for the whole season from now on we will be in the top two, there’s no doubt about this. When you win one game and draw two games and end up with seven wins and twelve draws, we’ll have enough points to finish in the top position so it’s important.

“We play the games to win them, that’s our mentality, but if not you have to dig in and grind out a result and that’s what we did today and will try to do on Friday.”

Nobody is saying those points disappear but if the 3rd place team has 80 points, then 81 (or as referenced earlier 80 with a better goal difference) that season would have been enough. The fact that the 2nd placed team had 90 really isn't relevant to the discussion.

The point stands that in 8 of the last 10 seasons, an average points gained per game of 1.92 would have been enough to have finished above the 3rd placed side. Let's not go around in circles saying the same thing over and over it just feels pointless
Taking 2016-17 as an example

Newcastle 94
Brighton 93
-------------------
Reading 85
Sheff Wed 81
Huddersfield 81
Fulham 80

If Brighton only needed 86 points that season to go up, there was another 7 points going to other teams, if 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th place had got those 7pts then 86 points would not have been enough as anyone of those teams would have got more than 86 if anyone of those teams got the missing 7points.

Lot's of ifs there Trampie. It's highly improbable (if not impossible) in your scenario that one of the teams from 3rd to 6th would have gotten all of those 7 unaccounted for points. You're into 'if my auntie had balls' territory now.

Sometimes it's better to admit you're wrong and put the shovel down. You don't have to look far to see what happens when people are unwilling to do that and make themselves looks like fools.

If teams are quite a few points behind automatic promotion places coming to the last or last but one games of the regular season they might rest their top players for the playoffs, so it is misleading to say that 1pt more than the 3rd place team was good enough for promotion when the 3rd place team might have given up the chase with a game or so to go.
Also sometimes the 2nd place team only finishes above the 3rd place team on goal difference or by a point or two, are you suggesting if you take a few points off second place so they finish 1 point above 3rd that the 3rd place team couldn't have gained those couple of points ?

SWANSEA CITY HOPEFUL OF KOREY SMITH RETURN AHEAD OF NORWICH CITY CLASH

Source: Swansea Official Site

Steve Cooper is hopeful Korey Smith could return in time to play a part in Swansea City’s clash with Championship leaders Norwich City on Friday night.

The midfielder has been sidelined for the past fortnight with a quad injury, with his last outing coming in the 2-0 victory at Barnsley on January 16.

That meant he missed the FA Cup win over Nottingham Forest and the Championship encounters with Brentford (1-1) and Rotherham United (3-1), but Smith is looking to feature against the club for whom he started his professional career.

And Cooper is hopefully the 30-year-old will be up for selection when the high-flying Canaries land at the Liberty.

The Swans boss will, however, have former Norwich loanee Kyle Naughton amongst his options after the defender served a one-match ban for his red card in the draw with Brentford.

Transfer deadline day signings Morgan Whittaker and Kieron Freeman will also be looking to make their debuts, although USA international Paul Arriola will not be involved as he’s yet to join the squad following his loan switch from DC United.

Liam Cullen, Wayne Routledge and Brandon Cooper remain the long-term absentees for the Swans.

“Korey is close,” confirmed Cooper. “I am hoping he will be available to be involved for Friday.

“Kyle is back from suspension, while there are no other injuries picked up this week.”

Look at the contortions you're doing to try and justify your argument. Could you be correct? Yes of course, but the odds are heavily weighted towards Phil being right and you being wrong.

Feel free to bookmark this thread and if it turns out that more points are needed this year then you can remind us. It still wouldn't change Phil's original point that we are on course to get enough points to have claimed automatic promotion in 8 of the last 10 seasons.

Everyone is beating everyone this season, the Championship is on course for a low scoring season points wise for the top teams, I think myself that it will be a lower number of points required this season than is usually the case, but I would not say that our run rate virtually guarantees automatic promotion.

Must win game as far as I am concerned against Norwich on Friday, I won't be happy if we don't beat Norwich.
People are talking about our average points, at the moment our average per game is not as good as two of our rivals who are both on course to break 90pts, let's hope we can catch at least one of them, Brentford look more likely to be champions than Norwich to me at the moment although Norwich are currently ahead of them.
Huge game for the Swans on Friday.

A draw would be a good result, but if we’ve got aspirations to go up in the top two then we need to be looking to win it. We played more than well enough in the return fixture to get 3 points, so we’ve a point to prove too.

I think the bar has just been raised and any points dropped from now on will be seen as points lost. No pressure!

Indeed a draw is not good enough if we have aspirations for top two.

Farke urges City to show their 'steel' in crunch promotion shoot-out against Swansea

Source: Eastern Daily Press

Daniel Farke says Norwich City will travel to South Wales excuse-free as they prepare for a crunch promotion shoot-out with Swansea.

Frustration is the overriding feeling amongst supporters at present after three matches where the Canaries failed to score, now they head to the Liberty Stadium in 48 hours hoping to get the better of their promotion rivals.

Steve Cooper, who worked with City's sporting director Stuart Webber at Wrexham and Liverpool, has transformed the Swans into credible promotion contenders by coaching them into being the best defensive side in the Championship. They have conceded only 15 goals this season.

City's draw with Millwall moved them five points clear, but the Welsh side have a game in hand and reduce that gap with a victory over Farke's men. Cooper's men will pose another sturn defensive test for the goal-shy Canaries.

During their title-winning season two seasons ago, City travelled to Elland Road and beat Leeds United 3-1 as they romped to the Championship title, Farke and his side will be hoping for a repeat of that display on Friday.

The under-par nature of City's performances in the last three matches has caused concern amongst City supporters on social media however, but Farke is keen to ensure his side travel to the Liberty Stadium excuse free and ready to show their steel.

"I have not thought about Swansea for one minute. We had to concentrate on Middlesbrough and Millwall. It's just one game. It's not a final and we're not overexcited.

"Perhaps Swansea are because they could prepare for this game and sit on the sofa and analyse us. They had a whole week to concentrate on this game and prepare in training whilst we have to play three games in six days, with two difficult away games in a row.

"We can't complain. It's just a fact. For such a game, you would wish for both teams to go into it with the same schedule. Not with one that has had three games in six days and two difficult away games with long travels in a row," Farke said.

"It's the same as not being able to score a goal, we don't search for excuses or to complain too much, you have to show some resilience and some steel. That's what we want to do at Swansea, to show some steel and grind out a result."
