Summer Transfer Window

Chuck them in for the first few games & see how they do.
It worked with Ben Davies - different circumstances with Taylor's injury but he was trusted to go straight in.
Same with Rodon.
I'm not saying these new youngers are at that level, but we won't know until we try.
With the window being open until Sept 1st, we can always arrange loans if that would be more beneficial.

Always think it's worth giving youth a go purely for financial reasons if nothing else; if we're unsure on the quality of Lissah/Wilson, even giving them a few runs off the bench can massively increase their value to new bidders

I believe Ben had been involved with the first team a lot that summer, in training and friendlies. I think Laudrup had seen enough to believe he was good enough to backup Taylor, otherwise we would have signed someone else to do that job.

If Sheehan looks at the youngsters in training and thinks any of them are good enough to backup/push first team players, then great. They can stay with the team and push for minutes. If he doesn't feel they're ready, then better loan them out and see if regular football elsewhere moves them forward in their development.

That's

That's a sensible, balanced approach.

There was nothing to choose between Ben and Joe Walsh as they battled it out for places during the season in the PL Reserve League, alternating every game - left side c/back and left back when Rodgers was head coach.
Rodon had a useful learning curve on loan at Cheltenham but on one occasion was substituted at the interval after a particular roasting from Akinfenwa.

Will be interesting to see just how many youngsters get involved in pre season, there are a good half dozen or so at least who might benefit from training with the squad even if they dont get opportunities in games

I didn't know that about Ben and Joe Walsh. Goes to show fine the margins are in who makes it and who doesn't. Joe went on to have a solid League 1 career, but would he have had Ben's career if Laudrup had thought he was the better player in the summer of 2012?

I genuinely don’t know the answer to this question. But I wonder whether sending players out to lower leagues is better than having regular exposure to a first team squad in the championship.
Is the much talked about toughening up process in the lower leagues as beneficial as some would claim?
Surely daily exposure to championship level players in training is a better preparation?
For sure stewing with our under 21s is not the answer for players with a high ceiling

The loan market thrives for a reason

Training is a completely different animal to playing in a competitive match

When a side loans a player usually its with the assumption that the player being loaned is preferably of superior quality (or potentially superior quality) to the pre existing options within that squad. A player can learn so much more when they are facing first team players in lower leagues than they would in what is usually a heavily curated and tailored environment as a youth/reserve team player.

It sounds cliche, but the competitive spirit and the hunger for a win knowing that the win bonus might be a vital part of your next paycheck is something that is increasingly not to be seen in the higher divisions where salaries in the Championship alone are in the thousands to tens of thousands per week and many times that in the Premier League.

In League One or League Two?
You can bet your ass that Dave the defender will do all he can to crush you to make sure that he gets that clean sheet bonus

I always thought Joe Walsh should have signed for Crystal Palace. 😉
