I agree on your view regards paying on a holding midfielder. The position is one where a player makes a big difference for both defence and attack.Playing devils advocate here a little.
The wage costs of the players that have left us would easily cover the reported O’Brien deal. Grimes and Pederson alone would come close. And we’ve lost Allen, Naughton as well who were on relatively significant sums. Plus Fulton is on a significant sum.
We are a few players short at present of being able to hold our own in this division. We are really in need of another three. One of whom is an experienced midfielder who can provide a really solid foundation for the young players we’ve brought in. In my mind, it’s the position that I would have paid more for as getting the spine right is everything. The creativity which hopefully we’ve added can flow from that.
Same with a centre forward. Although I wouldn’t be in favour of McBurnie at anything like the sums bandied about. His record since leaving us has been patchy to say the least and I think we could do better.
O’Brien, for me, is a loss.
I like the look of Inoussa but feel the full fee agreed is a bit more than we needed to pay for a player in that area of the pitch.
Part of me feels that they have gone early on players and in doing so have missed a proper sit down and discuss of a break down of where the squad really needed working on.
