Weekend Games Off

Funeral will be a week Monday so I’d imagine next week’s schedule will take place as normal. Government guidance was that sport and public events can go ahead so this decision was taken by the FA/PL/EFL and not one enforced by the “establishment”.

Thank God the game is off as judging by the responses on the Twitter feed when the club issued a condolence message, the club would have been utterly humiliated by some of our support.

Seriously, if you don’t care, no need to say so a hundred times. It’s just unbelievable how little class some have.

Surely common decency and basic manners mean that you can empathise with the family and also with those in our society who are upset by this even if you don’t agree with them? Silence is the correct response in those circumstances I would think?

No need to cancel football though, particularly mini and junior football.

Do you know what, I actually think there is a need. A short period of reflection for the country won’t go amiss. Some of the behaviour over the past 18 hours or so has been disgusting. Morons outside the palace trying to wave to the cameras, people falling over themselves to appear edgy on social media by saying how much they don’t like her. The dignity of the response from, for example, France should shame us. We seem to lack even basic decency at the moment and I have no doubt that if we were to play this weekend, any silence would be marred by morons from one side singing GSTQ and the other side booing it.

For clarity btw, I am a Republican. But I still empathise with the sadness so many feel and think we can all recognise what an enormous moment this is in our collective history. The criticism, fault finding and assessment of where next can wait a short while.

Forced mourning and misery. North Korea stuff.

Public figure so a minute silence is enough surely.

Well if the feeling amongst the fanbase is that all faux misery for is silliness, maybe we should just all get on with normal life and enjoy the games as normal.

Ultimately what you're advocating is a sideways method of restricting freedom of speech (which ironically all gammons are now in support of restricting).

Personally i think the balance should be games go ahead as planned with minutes silence and anyone whom doesn't want to observe it can wait outside the ground until its over. Which is what I'd do. Purely not to cause pointless conflict amongst the fans rather than any respect for the queen.

This break which is restricting peoples enjoyment will push people further and cause more resentment. We're only just out of covid.

We do have restricted freedom of speech. We are not the US.
And you know as well as I do that people wouldn’t wait outside. It would bring shame on us.

By the way, if you couldn’t bring yourself to be in the ground and keep quiet for a minute there’s something the matter with you. It’s not ‘respecting the Queen’, it’s basic decency. Same as the halfwits booing someone else’s anthem.

The fury of cancelling the football will look like a tea party if they don't put Emmerdale back on soon*

We have countless pointless international breaks which restrict our enjoyment without people making twenty moany comments about it. Although I’m not entirely certain that my enjoyment isn’t more restricted when we do play at the moment.
She was head of state for 70 years. One football match being delayed isn’t that big a deal really is it.

Yes but not observing a minutes silence for a dead monarch in itself (within reason) is not a criminal offence. So people are free to do that if they wish. I

I'd like to think people would - twitter is very different to real life and there would be serious crowd trouble if some did. Basic decency is reserved for people who deserve it, I'm not sure she does and the fact that it's an event at all (unelected figurehead - normal working people don't get them and they'll have supported the club their whole lives). Those people deserve respect.

But as I say staying outside until its over is the best neutral option.

International breaks where our national team (and others) play. So there is no break there for activities unrelated to football.

Well she was head of state but with no real responsibility- just a relic of a bygone era. Let's face, all normal peoples lives will not change - her dying isn't life changing. Not really a big deal.

But the response is making it an unwarranted bigger deal than it is.

Saying that you didn’t understand why it’s an event at all honestly makes you sound like an idiot.

It's more about this forced national mourning that is being put on us. Every radio station and TV station.

Everything we enjoy has been canceled to make sure us peasants show respect, but of course we still have to go to work.

She was 96 years old and past peaceful in her bed. She hasn't been assassinated or died in a car crash like Dianna. No matter how they try to paint the picture, the country isn't actually in shock. Just let us show respect but carry on with our lives.

Genuinely, you are being ridiculous. This is an absolutely seismic event for the country. In 500 years’ time yesterday will be talked about in any assessment of our history.

Well not many people outside of football would get a minutes silence yet I've acknowledged it should be done.

Ultimately we've all still got bills to pay and will get soaked in the rain today. Real peoples problems where life will go on (albeit more miserably without sport over the next few weeks)

Ukraine are playing football while they are literally fighting off an invasion. Let that sink in

It's not though is it? What tangible difference will there be to people's lives? Besides a slight change in a national anthem that isn't ours and a few new coins being minted?
