What are we really expecting from Matos....

On the flipside, it's tedious to see the cycle of complaining about the manager when results are poor, eulogising the new guy when results improve, only to complain about him when results drop, etc.

There is nothing wrong with standing by the opinion that appointing Matos was a huge gamble. Anyone arguing otherwise when his managerial experience consisted of 12 games in Portugal's second division is being disingenuous.

I'm sure Lisa would agree that a lot of our more successful managers of recent times have also been gambles:

- Martinez had no experience
- Rodgers had flopped at Reading
- Potter had only managed in Sweden
- Cooper had only managed at U16 and U17 level
Totally agree about how quickly people can turn on a manager.

Nothing wrong with standing by an opinion, there's nothing wrong with holding your hands up and admitting you might have got it wrong either.

All about opinions, I guess.

Absolutely. I hold my hands up about Laudrup for example. I vocally defended the club's decision to sack him at the time, being used to consistent good decision-making from the club at that point. You could argue that the decision to appoint Monk permanently was the bigger mistake (I remember being unsure about that decision), but I was still wrong.

I see Lisa's point though and don't think this is something she got wrong. Appointing a manager with only 12 games experience is the definition of a gamble. Doesn't mean it was a bad decision though. I think it would still count as a gamble at the time even if Matos turns out to be our most successful manager of all time. That just makes it a spectacularly successful gamble!

At the end of the day, this is probably an argument about semantics more than anything else and so incredibly boring. I should stop contributing or a certain grumpy poster will be calling me pedantic again...

Hindsight is a wonderful thing 🤣

You're far from pedantic, in fact I'd say you're one of the best posters on here 👊🏼

If we had a cutting edge up front we would be playoff contenders.
We are defensively decent by all metrics (dont fall for recency bias and quote the Milwall game)
We are also getting our wide men into excellent positions to create chances.
However, this is where the wheels fall off.
On both wings - and the right in particular our use of attacking positions is bottom of the league.
I LOVE Ronalds work rate but he actually delivers nothing in an attacking sense - and unfortunately Eom Widell and Inoussa are not far behind. Ronald has also painted himself into a corner because of his theatrical antics. It is clear that referees talk and they know that Ronald is a serial cheater. This means he doesn’t get attacking free kicks even when he is actually fouled. I dont blame the refs at all.
Can you imagine how much more threatening we would be with a Tymon on both flanks?
Matos has visibly improved Fulton Widell Stamenic and even Key from the last outing.
If he cannot improve our wide players - then we need to strengthen in the transfer market and potentially move a few players on.

If you bet your life savings on a 300-1 shot in a race and it wins it’s still a massive gamble. It’s just a gamble that paid off. By any definition giving Matos the job was a gamble. Let’s hope it pays off. The early signs are promising.

Yeah get that but every manager is a gamble, Rodgers was a gamble when he was coming off the back of a horror spell at Reading, Martinez when he had never managed a game in his life. We don't know anything about him of course as we don't work in the game and we haven't spoken to him etc but when the guys making the decisions are speaking to the likes of Modric, Ancelotti jnr who did his badges with him, others who have worked with him in Liverpool etc thought the risk was alot less than what we fans did just by looking at his management CV.

No arguments with any of that. Some of our greatest ever managers have been massive gambles when appointed. You just named two of them in Rodgers and Martinez. Both huge gambles, two of the best ever to do the job here. Let’s hope Matos makes it three then everyone is happy. 👌

You lambasted the fella when his name was linked to the job and when he was appointed.

When you mention this board being tedious upon times. It's the failure of people prepared to hold their hands up and admit they may have got a wrong about certain players and managers, now that is what is really tedious.
I didn’t ever lambast the fella. I criticised the decision to appoint a manager with next to no experience as a huge gamble given the position we were in. It was. And remains so. Whatever the outcome.

And it’s way too early to tell whether it will ultimately be a good appointment or not.

When Sheehan was appointed as caretaker his first ten matches saw us gain 20 points. So 5 more than Matos has gained in the same period. And look how that turned out.

By the way, that’s another example of the same thing albeit in reverse.

It was a good decision of the club to appoint Sheehan because of his record. The fact that it turned out badly doesn’t change the fact that the decision was correct.

We all hope it will turn out well this time as to be frank, our last few managers have all ended up being disastrous.

A point Smurph is determined to keep pretending he doesn’t understand for some reason.

Odd thing to say.

We still look vulnerable defensively Cabango with Burgess struggle with pace .
Looking at the performances of Vigouroux with how many saves he makes shows our we struggle.
The biggest weakness is creating chances .

Odd thing to say.

So if Matos takes us up his appointment was a huge gamble and not an inspired appointment?

Sorry Smurph and I say this as someone who has a massively boring degree in statistics that has made me a few quid but thankfully I’ve veered away from it.

If you make a big gamble, the outcome doesn’t mean that the initial gamble wasn’t a big gamble.

What if they appoint Monmouth, everyone would be like ‘wtf?!’, then his ‘shoot, you c*nts’ (excellent btw) tactic gets us promoted. Doesn’t mean that putting a JANET poster in charge was inspired.

I’m not saying that I’m loving what Matos has done so far, long may it continue.
