Captain Grimes on his way to Coventry City?

Here's my theory based on what we know so far, what has happened in the past and what we know about the personalities involved. Possibly cobblers, maybe a hint of truth.

The players aren't happy with Wiliams. That much seems certain. So Grimes, in his capacity as "Captain", and as we know he has done before, has gone to Coleman to whinge about it.

Coleman, undoubtedly suffering from his own buyers remorse over Williams, facing the headache of finding a replacement during a transfer window that they'd already planned for and well aware that Grimes' griping was one of the reasons why we found ourselves in the position of needing to appoint a new manager in the first place, has lost his temper and basically told Statty to shut up and play, to do what we're handsomely paying him to do and stop pretending that he's the one in charge.

Grimes has gone to the rest of the squad for support and found out that he is perhaps not as universally popular as he might have thought. Lots of them are new, many may be harbouring their own doubts as to whether a style of play that seems to have been custom designed to suit one man may not be ideal to make the best out of their own talents, and would be quite happy to change things up in a way that Grimes would not like and have told him so.

MG's agent suddenly finds himself with extra work to do.

Somewhere in there is probably some truth to be found.

What is beyond question is that two of the last three managerial appointments have been made purely to placate Grimes. That is not a sign of a healthy football club.

I've always had a bit of a "manager's son in a kids team" vibe about Grimes. We all know the type. Plays every game. Takes almost every set piece. Captain. Undroppable from all three roles no matter how poorly he might play.

The reaction to his departure by the other players might suggest that their feelings aren't entirely dissimilar. Maybe they were fed up of him too, and taking his ball elsewhere when it suits him was just the cherry on top.
I agree. We've always called him the manager's or chairman's love child in our section of the stand. No matter how poor he played, he was always picked.

People / media call him "consistant". Consistantly average. He will never pull up any trees, otherwise he wouldve gone to the PL a long time ago. For me, you can see that Franco is a better all round footballer than MG.
I'm probably more enthused about us this weekend than I have been in years, and that's because of the excitement of not knowing what we're going to get for a change.
Me too.

I have already had a thought that there is a rot in the club. Someone keeps complaining that its the manager's fault, the manager gets sacked and its the same merry-go-round 6-12 months later.

I'm not sure it's anything as complicated as that.

I reckon Coventry just approached Grimes (I heard him and Lampard have the same agent?) and offered him a big pay rise, Grimes decided it was too good a deal to turn down and the players rightly feel annoyed that their captain has decided to jump ship mid-season, at a time when the team/club is struggling.

Hopefully it will create a siege mentality in the dressing room now, an "us against the world" mentality, at a time when it's badly needed. It could be the best thing Grimes ever did for the club

I’m sure Williams said they offered him more money, but still couldn’t convince him to stay. No big loss for me and I’m interested to see how the team respond tomorrow.

"I've always struggled to articulate exactly what it is about him that I've never liked, but your opening paragraph there nails it for me"

I agree with this assessment too. It bothers me significantly that in football if the employees (players) don't like the boss (coach) they can seemingly down tools with impunity. I think this stems from the ridiculous wages they are paid (admittedly funded by d*ckheads like me who are Sky subscribers) and the sense of entitlement that engenders. Wouldn't it be good if coaches were more like I understand Fergie was; a bit more respect should be due along with a proper appreciation of who is boss.

If Grimes really was a "manager's son" type it beggars belief that 3 Swans managers let him get away with it for so long. Should have been put fairly and squarely in his box.

Conjecture I realise as I have no evidence either way

How long ago was it that we started a league game and Grimes was not in the line up?

By his pre match press conference I don't think the club did too much to keep him as "he had made his mind up"

No talk of a meeting with the chef and kit man.

Agree. Occam’s Razor.

Surely Coventry would have needed permission to speak to Grimes as a player under contract to us? Or are those niceties a thing of the past now? Isn't that what all the fuss about Martin and Southampton was about?

If as posted above, that Grimes and Lampard have the same agent, then the initial conversation, would be one person taking to himself and seeing the £ sign.

It happens all the time with players, you often hear "player x has agreed personal terms with club y, now club y just needs to agree a transfer fee with club z".

Players and agents will talk and figures will be thrown around so heads will be turned. Agents often get blamed for trying to move their players but the player can always tell their agent they aren't interested in moving, since the agent is working for them.

The Martin situation was muddied because Southampton made their initial approach when they were still technically a Premier League club and Martin's contract had a different compensation figure for Premier League and Championship clubs. We argued that they should pay the higher compensation figure and they countered, saying they'd already been relegated so they should pay the lower figure

So I wonder if we registered the paperwork before midday to allow him to play for them tomorrow, me thinks we’ve deliberately delayed it.

I read it as they talked about offering him more but couldn’t get close to what Coventry were offering. I’m not sure why Coventry are suddenly deciding to splash the cash on wages, and don’t really care. Fk em 🤣

Hopefully he'll play against us, it's looking increasingly like Grimes was pretty much disliked by his teammates in the end, he seems to have let his ego run away with itself. Hopefully his actions will have galvanised the rest of our squad now. Also giving Cabango the armband could be the making of the lad.
The king is dead, long live the king...
