Who can we rely on to replace him in that defensive role?
Thought Downes was a better defensive midfield option with his pace being able to track back covering our WB and against counter attacks through the midfield even with his inexperience but thought he was of more useful going forward as well.
It would now appear that Fulton is struggling to do the box to box stuff as consistently as he use to, so are we back in the poor situation similar to when Hourihane joined not enough legs or movement on the park?
Funny how when we have a number of runners in the team players prepared to come short, going long, pulling players around, Allen(when able), Cundle, Cooper and Cullen we seem to create space to cause the opposition problems, same as last year.
If you look at the goal on Saturday, Ashby was very reluctant to push forward onto their fullback, when he did his pace, size and strength caused what seemed a very tricky player problems, movement?
At times we now have 7 playing defensively, WBs coming back to receive the ball and the middle two back to help the CBs either someone pushes up from the backs to offer options to the WB or the 3 advance player have to work out who is going to drop into the middle and who is going to go long to ensure players not isolated. You could say in an attempt to get Grimes further forward on Saturday, Patino came deeper than Cooper would but either way still the team looks disjointed.
Not enough movementon the park leaving Grimes and Fulton looking overrun at times.
For me Grimes doesn't compare to Leon Britton or Allen each of whom offered better movement off the ball, Fulton used to offer that movement allowing Grimes more space and options but something is missing at the moment.
