Grimes

2 seasons ago if we got 1 million for Grimes we would have been delighted. He has matured as a player. I think 4-5mill in current climate is probably ok. Also he will probably get a far better wage than we would probably offer. Good luck Matty.

You should work as a negotiating consultant on transfers Phil. Sounds like a doddle of a job.

Certainly far from a doddle but I have seen first hand just what the negotiation skills of Steve Kaplan look like and both the deals have his footprint all over it.

And it always seems slightly odd that other clubs do seem to get what players are worth (and in many cases more than they are worth)

No problem if you can't say, but have you sat on a transfer negotiation? What would you say he lacks, if you did. I find it hard to believe that international businessmen struggle to get the best price for a commodity, based on posters opinions on a football message board (I know you would have a better idea than most on here). You've only got to read this board and you've got some people blaming the owners, others blaming Winter.

I'm just sucked off with out fans first reaction to anything which doesn't go the way they want, is to slag the club off, it's really wearing! If some of these fans were around in the 80's they would be having a breakdown every week.

Surely if Grimes was being sold at such an undervalue there’d be another 6 teams lining up for him?

Exactly, the same when Rodon was leaving us.

Fans always seem to overvalue their own players, and undervalue everybody else's.

Despite never having really seen everybody else’s players

£4m would seem cheap if it wasn't for the fact he's out of contract at the end of the season. If it's true we can only offer him a new deal on reduced wages, then obviously he isn't going to sign it. So the choice is to keep him for the season and lose him for nothing (unless we get promoted, which seems like a bad gamble to make) or get the best we can for him now.

In that scenario, £4m seems about right and far too much for the club to turn down. Let's hope it funds a couple of incoming players to strengthen for the new manager.

Oh and if choosing to sell a player in the last year of his contract who won't sign a new deal on terms the club can afford really is the reason for Cooper going, then he's even more of a pr*ck.

although i am not overly gutted with this one (price aside) - was always neat and tidy but never really controlled matches himself
Overhyped and a poor captain.
Will struggle

Not sat directly in one but I also don't think they actually take place over a negotiating table per se. Kaplan's negotiation skills lack any level of personal touch if that makes sense largely as I don't think he actually understands how football works so he probably use his business skills to try and do deals but ends up with less than he actually could get because of that. Not sure that makes sense, it's a difficult one to explain but I know he almost screwed up the Gylfi deal

I'd agree with the last paragraph although FWIW I do think the club have royally screwed up the whole managerial position to allow it still to be going on at this stage of the close season

Two theoretical possibilities I suppose.

1. The transfer market has taken a hit as a result of Covid and the immaterial assets like Grimes are no longer worth what they were.

2. There’s a bit of off book trading going on and the buying club has agreed to recompense the difference in other ways.

Edit:

3. Fundamental lack of knowledge / expertise of the market you’re dealing in as outlined above.

Here's a similar situation at two much bigger clubs. Real Madrid have agreed a fee with Man United for Raphael Varane of £34m with add-ons potentially taking it to £42m.

If he had a longer contract (or was willing to sign a new one), then he would cost way more, possibly breaking Maguire's record transfer fee for a defender. But Madrid would rather take a lesser amount now than lose him for nothing next summer. They've taken around a 50% hit on his potential value, so £4m for Grimes would be pretty decent, as I don't think anyone would pay £8m for him if he was under contract here for longer.

It's not good that we can't afford to keep him, but £4m would be nothing like the disaster some are making out. I wouldn't be surprised if he goes for significantly less than that personally.

Article linking him with Brighton and Watford ... price available for £1.5m apparently... now thats a fckin joke

Serious questions need to be asked if true.

Getting our pants pulled down regular in negotiations.

for the sake of 1.5millio you may as well keep him and let him go free end of year
