January Transfer Rumours

A combination of Covid and FFP basically killed the big money transfer from The Championship.

£20m+ for McBurnie and Dan James before it. Struggling to get £10m+ for Piroe, Downes and Rodon afterwards. Premier League clubs simply aren't prepared to take the risk of spending a significant chunk of their budget on lower league players any more, especially considering how many struggle afterwards.

They'd rather shop abroad.

Brighton signed Joao Pedro for just under £30 million, and Adam Wharton joined Palace for an initial £18 million. Eze joined Palace from QPR for an initial £16 million.

Olise joined Palace for a release fee of £8 million. Reading then got a fair chunk of the sale to Bayern Munich.

Oliver, Eze and Pedro have all been big successes. Wharton is doing well too.

Georgina Rutter 45M
Archie Gray 40M
Jude Bellingham 30M
Viktor Gykores 25M
Jacob Greaves 21M
Alex Scott 23M

Can you not see the gems yourself, coops ? Your eyeball test is normally a decent barometer here.
No doubt a couple more in the proven global pipeline …..
(Very few in the academy, needs a proper shake up)
Bianchini, Eom, could turn out well, but we won’t know until the Williams millstone is removed. Franco, without a doubt, but you don’t seem to fancy him, or is my perception off kilter?

He makes grimes look distinctively average so of course mrs grimes doesn't like him!

Hence basically as opposed to completely. There will always be some.

Also worth noting that the majority of big money sales from The Championship to the Premier League since 2020 have been from newly relegated clubs.

Yes defo Franco (but not in deep pivot, yet)
Ron, Vig, Eom, Bianchini and possibly Vip - and totally concur re the Williams limiting factor

We so need and deserve a proper coach

Would you be happy removing Williams and going ahead with Sheehan?

The trouble is very few players move to PL clubs for fees north of £10 million. MacGuiness moving from Cardiff to Luton for £10 million was very much the exception, and facilitated by parachute payments.

At least in the last two windows we have brought in players who are proving their worth for us, especially Ronald, Vigouroux, Franco and Eom. Vipotnik and Bianchini are still in the jury's out category. This is at least progress from the summer 23 window, where we had so many signings not good enough for us let alone suitable for selling on for a profit.

I think the best route for making profits on player trading is the academy - but we need to get back to Category one status, and invest more on recruitment to it.
Ronald and Eom proving their worth for us ??? 🤣🤣🤣

I'm not sure anyone can come to any accurate evaluation of the worth or otherwise of any of our attacking players given the way the team is sent out to play most weeks.

All of them have provided some evidence of capability. The question is whether the lack of consistency is down to them or management. I'd want to see them all play under a manager who actually wants to play attacking football as opposed to one who pretends to before I cast final judgement.

Ronald has 6 assists so far this season, joint third in the league. He's also high up on winning ground duels. He frustrates a lot of the time, but his work rate is off the scale, which is why his numbers are more than decent.

Eom's decision making needs to improve, he attempts shots when there are better passing options available, for instance against Southampton when Tymon overlapped in the area with acres of space. But if you look at Eom's technical ability, on a par with Grimes, his dribbling ability and very high cross completion it's only a matter of time before he gets assists and goals. He's definitely a good buy, we just need a bit of patience.

As you should know assists and other such jargon do not exist in my football world. I personally think they are both, at best, League 1 players and symptomatic of our weak, badly put together threadbare squad.

It still happens although it does tend to be the bigger clubs that get the bigger fees although the Jacob Greaves proves it most certainly is not a thing of the past for other teams.

No reason if teams go down the correct channels that getting big fees for players can't be done.

We were hamstrung with Piroe's length of contract remaining otherwise we could certainly have got 20M plus.
