The calculation is based entirely on the position of the person attempting the shot and the context, so players at different clubs would be given the same expected assist score as long as the position of the shot and other relevant contextual stuff are the same. Whether or not a goal is scored is irrelevant to the calculation. It's as good a measure of the potential of the opportunity as you will get.

This is the sort of info that's invaluable in unearthing hidden gems. If recruitment teams went on goals and assists alone they'd potentially miss out on players with greater potential.

- Eyeballs = Subjective, wholly dependent on the FQ (Football Intelligence) of the eye beholder

- So, it’s as clear as day that many online fans have minimal FQ and a bit squinty eyes - most certainly not the best barometer when assessing football stuff

Then, we’ll have to agree to disagree on this one.
Tymon has the best expected assists tally in the league, but the reality is, he is joint 31st.
To me, this particular stat is arse-dribble and the factual stats bare that out

I understand why a world where Premier League clubs recruit PhDs from Oxbridge to their data analytics departments feels alienating. But it ain't going away. In fact it will only intensify with time.

I understand using data analytics to track fitness, distance covered etc.....

I know it appears to be trendy to a certain generation of todays football supporter, a bit like being bothered about having more possession of the ball than the opposition as opposed to the good old fashioned way of out scoring your opponents to win the game.

What I will never understand is someone looking at spreadsheet to decide if a player can cross a ball regardless if they have a Phd or not.

The only way of judging ability is by watching someone in the flesh. There is no powerpoint presentation in the world which will give any club the information needed to fully understand the ability of a player and if he or she is worth signing.
