Grimes could be an interesting one here - widely expected to leave but may the new manager be able to persuade him to stay? Grimes best season was under Potter and I think that won't be lost on him if Martin is keen to keep him

He would have no resources to strengthen elsewhere then though surely? Unless there’s another sale going on in background.

The last figure though I saw quoted for Grimes was £1.5m, that's not a big kitty albeit bigger than a £0 one...!

That's the drum I've been banging.

If we sell Matthew Grimes for anywhere near the fee reported - which ranges between 1.5M to 4M , we're not going to get a player that is half a Matt Grimes to replace him on that kind of money.

My guess, and advice to him, would be to stay and see how it pans out until January. Maybe he wants to move before his baby is born so they can get settled, who knows, but he has a much bigger value to us than 4M.

Surely those figures aren't correct though, Winter would need to be dragged along Wind Street with a sign on his neck and Cooper behind ringing the bell.

But if it is true, then my vote would definitely change to Stick on the poll on other thread.

Pretty sure I saw articles saying that 1.5m is way wide of the mark of what we would sell Grimes for.
If thats all that is on offer then we need to keep him, the common wisdom anyway is 2 per position and Grimes/Walsh would cover the holding midfielder position quite nicely.

No offence intended to Walsh, but he isn't lasting a Championship season with his fitness record, he's gone off injured in both friendlies he has featured in.

I hope thats right - I was critical enough at £4m but accept the reasons for it but at £1.5m we may as well - as you say - keep him

Listening to him, and learning of the stats he achieved at MKD, I'm surprised he wasn't first choice. On the face of it it's a fantastic appointment, and now I can't wait for the season to get under way
But...we must all be patient - vocally too!!

Wages are the issue with Grimes
To me hes a good player, who doesnt seem to do any role completely, more can just dabble in each midfield role
Martin had O'Reilly at MK, whos kind of similar, so that could be the replacement should he leave on a lot less money and younger

Give me the very underrated Fulton every time, a player who could easily fill the Grimes roll and not afraid to put his body on the line... 4 million for Grimes mind, fùckin daylight robbery

It doesn’t have to be one or the other. Very different players. It’s correct to say that Fulton is not afraid of a tackle but where people are incorrect is when they call him a ball winning or holding midfielder because of it. Fulton is very much an attacking midfielder, a very good footballer in fact, and Grimes is a deep lying playmaker. Apples and oranges.

Absolutely two very different players, but it's my opinion that Fulton is more than capable of playing the holding roll.

Something in our midfield needs to change for this season, it was one of our major problems last season with very little creativity in it. Whether that is personel or formation we must get our midfield players creating more and scoring more goals. It says it all when Roberts and cabango are scoring more than our midfield players.

I think you can acredit that to the ball going over their heads for the majority of games

This myth....I sometimes wonder if peole actually watched games or just relied on the views of certain posters. I am not saying there werent games were sometimes the ball pinged back and fore....mostly when Bennet was playing and then Cooper dropped him.#

I have posted highlights several times but for a narrative that says our style was hoofball these few games dont demonsrate that and there are loads more examples...I am sure this squad will not need long to adapt to Martins style of play...especially if he is not under any "pressure" to get us promoted this season.

Lots of examples of Possesion passing football with moves starting from the back..yet we only ever played hoofball and sat back never taking the game to to the opposition.

I said majority but ok I'll elaborate
When we held a 1-0 lead or felt the opposition was stronger than us, our midfield was always bypassed to shore up at the back
We had less possession than our opponents in 27 matches last season, sometimes going as low as mid 30s poessession wise

Im not saying Cooper wasnt tactically astute, but he never played the way we wanted and we very rarely dominated games possession wise, to dominate possession is to win the midfield battle which we never did as we always lobbed it up to Ayew to hold up or passed it to the wing backs to cross constantly
