New Deal For Jay Fulton

He was part of the worst midfield we have had at this club in the modern era. Literally bored people to sleep, and drove thousands away from watching the club. His latest contract has only seen him come to life towards the very end of it. All those are facts . And his reward for all that? Unbelievably another 2 year contract . The club have lost the plot.
embarrassing

I don't totally agree with all that but would be untrue to myself if I said that you are totally wrong.
There are a few scenarios that can be discussed and taken into account but the only correct answer will come in time.

He’s always been a tidy player, unfortunately the systems and style of play implemented by some of Matos predecessors have failed to get the best out of him.
If Matos thinks he can play a part in his system and can contribute to the club having a successful on field future that’s good enough for me.

He’s apparently very professional in training etc and leads by example, maybe, just maybe the club can also see that and are grooming him as a potential coach for the future.

Its a football club not bloody DJ Thomas!
😁

He and Matos have certainly clicked, but he's the type of player that managers like anyway. Competent managers at least.

Stop talking sense mun. That simply won't do.

Paulo Sousa's one season in charge saw us deliver some of the most mind-numbingly boring football I'd witnessed up to that point in my life. Many of the same players delivered far more exciting football the following season under Brendan Rodgers (and indeed many had done so the previous season under Roberto Martinez).

On the opposite end of the scale, many of the players who delivered not-great-to-watch but effective performances under Steve Cooper that led to us earning 80 points and finishing 4th, followed that up by mostly giving poor performances under Russell Martin that led to 61 points and a 15th place finish.

It's almost as if there are other factors to take into consideration other than a player's individual performance...

Dont perform for a couple of years and then perform forthe last 3 months and get rewarded for it.
Makes sense I suppose 👍
Flip that on its head - you play fantastic for years - then have a brief dip in form - so you get rid?
I hope/believe our decision makers are more sophisticated than you.
Fulton has (at times) shown premier league quality, and is a great fit for what our new coach wants - and Matos is certainly getting a tune out of him. Sure he is not perfect - but playing the role next to Grimes for years literally killed his all round game.
Add to the fact that Matos and colleagues repeatedly say what a top notch pro he is. Fulton is a fantastic depth piece for this squad IMO.
I have way more concerns re the Fish. That is based on a decent number of observations where he has zero presence, cannot command his area, and is like a rabbit in the headlights when exposed 1 on 1.
No doubt a thoroughly good egg - but in the basics of goal keeping he has never shown me that he has the basic ingredients.

I think this is an okay deal for us, especially on reduced terms. If/when we sign a starting right back, Galbraith and Stamenic will be two good options for the base of midfield and then Fulton as a solid 3rd choice, we could be in a worse spot, I don’t see the negative here.

His previous contract renewal was whilst under Russell Martin 🫣

After Russy spent several months trying to push him out, and was halfway out the door himself at the time. Let's not pretend that that Neil Quornock (Thanks Rangers fans!) rated him from the off.
