New European League Announced Tonight

I don’t have Sky and I won’t be taking out a subscription to watch this new competition, they can shove it ..........

The whole concept makes me sick, these teams have far more resources than most of the club’s in their leagues and they just want more and more. It will ruin the competitive nature of the league which is a significant part of the attraction of the PL where a lot of the teams can beat each other.

I did think Real Madrid and Barcelona were owned by fan members and not shareholders. How that works legally is another question but maybe more backlash to come there.

Cut the six loose immediately, impose bans on thier players representing thier countries, and, when the Americans get tired of it all and pull the plug, make them start at the bottom of the league pyramid.

Simples ✌

The bans of their players for the Euros could be interesting. Apart from the fact that it would devastate Wales, can someone be legally banned because their employer did something over which they had no control? The courts could be busy.

I’m not how they could ban players from playing in a competition as a punishment for playing in a league they’ve not yet played in. They could get transfers by the time the league started.

would these clubs be breach of contract with the players? could they quit the clubs and find other employment? it should be like any other job.

Can't envisage many players walking out on multi-million pound contracts to play International football for free.

The more I think about it banning players from the Euros sounds like a non starter to me. Quite simply the product on offer will be nowhere near what was expected when broadcast rights were bid for and when sponsorship was bid for. Will UEFA happily give those companies very large rebates which they will inevitably demand? I doubt it. UEFA and FIFA are two of the most corrupt bodies on the planet. Their gnashing of teeth over this isn’t about the beautiful game, it’s about losing control and hence, money.

Banning players who have had nothing to do with this move before they have taken part in the super league sounds very dodgy legally to me.

What's the point of fan ownership when decisions like this are made without even consulting them, the real Madrid president is the main one behind all this

The Barcelona socios are trying to push( for it to be taken to a vote according to some reports. The issue for them an Real is that they are effectively bust and desperate for the money this would bring.

Chelsea may be wavering apparently. And they have an issue with the fans vehicle that owns their pitch and name.

Players can theoretically only play in FIFA and UEFA tournaments if they are registered with an affiliated club. These clubs will be unaffiliated so the players will be ineligible. The clubs have become unaffiliated by resigning from the ECA.

One issue therefore has to be whether the clubs themselves have just breached contracts with the players by resigning (which they all did yesterday it seems). That would be fascinating...

Hugely complex employment law stuff.

Didn’t something similar once happen with cricket?

I understand that (although numbers in India etc mean it’s not that insignificant!) - it’s more the principle of preventing players playing for an international team.

Of course one answer is that the FA, for example, are just told not to pick any players with one of these clubs. Either by FIFA / UEFA or by the government. Not much the players could do about not being selected.

Yes...it took them 5 days of very boring and strange ins and outs to draw out the result.
