CONOR HOURIHANE | WE'RE DETERMINED TO KEEP RUN GOING

Source: Swansea Official Site

Conor Hourihane insists Swansea City are geared up for another Championship challenge when Steve Cooper’s side head to Rotherham United on Saturday (3pm).

The Swans are flying high in the Championship and rose back up to second in the table following the midweek draw with Brentford at the Liberty – a result that takes their unbeaten run to eight games in all competitions.

Rotherham remain in the relegation zone, sitting two points from safety, but have two games in hand over Wayne Rooney’s Derby County.

But the Millers will be buoyed by their stunning 3-0 midweek win at Middlesbrough, and Hourihane is expecting a tough afternoon in Yorkshire.

“They had a great result in midweek,” said the Irish international, who scored his first Swans goal in midweek following his arrival on loan from Aston Villa.

“If we can go there and pick three points up - it won't be easy because every game's tough - it will cement how big a point the draw with Brentford was for us.

“We have to back it up with a good display and a better performance on the ball on Saturday, and hopefully kick on to keep our unbeaten run going.

“If we can get three points at the weekend - with no midweek game it means we can rest up a little bit - that would be huge for us.”

TALKING TACTICS | ROTHERHAM UNITED V SWANSEA CITY

Source: Swansea Official Site

Football stats experts WhoScored.com take a closer look at new Swansea City signing Conor Hourihane, and the impact he could make in Saturday's Championship fixture at Rotherham.

All things considered, a point against fellow promotion rivals Brentford on Wednesday night was a good result for Swansea City. Having been reduced to 10 men with 20 minutes left to play, Conor Hourihane cancelled out Tariqe Fosu-Henry's opening goal as Swansea held out to share the spoils on home turf.

The stalemate extended the Swans' unbeaten run to six league matches, that the second current longest streak of its kind in the Championship, while four wins in that run means Steve Cooper's side occupy one of the two automatic promotion places coming into the trip to Rotherham.

The Millers sit in the bottom three ahead of Saturday's clash but, despite their position in the table, they are not to be taken lightly. Paul Warne has overseen a three-game unbeaten run of late, with a 3-0 win at Middlesbrough meaning it is seven points from the last nine available in that period.

Home form has been the issue for Warne's Rotherham side, however. They have picked up just one win from their last five and their 12 points accrued on familiar turf is among the lowest in the Championship. Conversely, Swansea have picked up 21 points on their travels in 2020-21, that the fourth best Championship tally coming into the weekend's round of fixtures.

Swansea also boast a solid record against the Millers, winning four of the last six fixtures between the two sides, though the sole defeat in that streak came in this game the season before last. Nevertheless, given Swansea's away form this season, Cooper will be keen to guard against complacency at the New York Stadium and ensure his side returns to south Wales with another crucial three points.

It's likely that Cooper will again turn to the Premier League experience of Hourihane in a bid to secure another victory. The 29-year-old, who joined from Aston Villa on loan earlier this month, made his Swansea debut in the 5-1 FA Cup win over Nottingham Forest. Having netted on his league debut for the Swans, he'll be aiming to maintain his good start to life in Cooper's side.

Rotherham's record of 15 home goals conceded in the Championship this season is the fourth worst in the division and Hourihane boasts the attacking qualities to try and take advantage of that record..

Indeed, one of Hourihane's five statistically calculated WhoScored.com strengths is 'key passes' and, with a keen eye for prying apart opposition defences, the 29-year-old will be confident of utilising this quality to try and put Swansea in the driving seat in Yorkshire. And it's not just from open play where Hourihane can really test the Rotherham defence.

One of Rotherham's four statistically calculated WhoScored.com weaknesses is 'avoiding fouling in dangerous areas'. Hourihane, meanwhile, boasts strengths of 'taking set-pieces' and 'direct free-kicks', so if the Millers do commit offenses around their 18-yard box, then the on-loan midfielder has the means of punishing Saturday's hosts.

Hourihane, though, is not the only central midfielder with top-flight experience that'll take to the New York Stadium field on Saturday. Shaun McDonald, made a handful of Premier League appearances for Bournemouth and his top-flight knowledge in the middle of the park is key for Rotherham. Boasting statistically calculated WhoScored.com strengths of 'tackling' and 'ball interception', McDonald has the means to keep Hourihane and co. at bay.

Yet Hourihane has made a fine start to life for the Swans and will be looking to maintain that on Saturday. After his first goal for the club helped Swansea to a point, the Republic of Ireland international will be out to ensure he can play his role in securing his first league victory in Cooper's side.

Warne’s pre-Swansea City press highlights

Source: Rotherham Official Site

Rotherham United manager Paul Warne was on iFollow Millers press duty ahead of his side’s clash with promotion-chasing Swansea City at AESSEAL New York Stadium tomorrow.

The Millers will boosted by some impressive recent displays heading into the fixture with the Swans, none more so than Wednesday night’s 3-0 win over Middlesbrough at the Riverside, Warne reflected on that performance and the form of his team.

Unfortunately, the gaffer delivered some bad news on Chiedozie Ogbene, who has suffered an injury setback. This sadly means the fans’ favourite is due for a further spell on the sidelines. Warne revealed the extend of the injury, as well as offering the winger his full support following the news.

You can read the highlights from his interview below, with video content to follow shortly HERE on iFollow Millers.

Warne on Wednesday night’s win at Middlesbrough…

“I was really pleased, I thought we could have won by a bigger margin, but on the other hand we also could have conceded as well. Overall, I was really pleased, I thought that if the lads played at their absolute best we could win there.

“They had played on the Sunday, whereas we’d not played for eight days, obviously goals change games and Crooksy scored to deservedly put us ahead at half time. They came back at us and Jamal Blackman made a crucial save at a big time and then we were fortunate enough to take two more goals.

“I thought the performance was good, we limited them to few chances and it was a good away performance. I wouldn’t like to single anyone out, but to see our front two players score is really good and there were some really good performances, it was a great day at the office.”

Warne on winning successive away games…

“Obviously, we’re just trying to win as many games as we can. I think this year away games are probably not as intimidating without fans in, so I feel it’s more of a level playing field. I’ve been saying for a few weeks now that we feel we’re in a good run of form, all we can do is try and turn out performance and recently the lads have been excellent.

“We were really good against Derby and it shows how well we’ve played considering the two wins they picked up after playing us. We did everything we could to win the game at home to Stoke and again against Middlesbrough, to get three points was really rewarding and it certainly shows we’re going in the right direction.”

Warne on the form of Michael Smith and Matt Crooks…

“His (Michael Smith’s) performances have been excellent, I think in fairness Freddie and George have been fantastic in training as well, so that has pushed the standards right up and both are edging the get on the pitch.

“Smudge is having a good run in the side, he looks confident and match-sharp and he has a great understanding with Crooksy which helps, although of course a striker is only as good as the service he gets.

“I have a lot of admiration at the moment for my midfielders, I think everyone in the middle is putting a monumental shift in. I’ve always loved Crooksy, I don’t think he had the greatest start to the season, but not all players do, but he is definitely a player in form at the moment.

“I’m really pleased with him, he’s a goal threat and the fact he’s getting goals is making him a lot more confident to shoot more, which will mean he should get more. Hopefully that will continue.”

Warne on Jamal Blackman’s recent displays…

“Jamal was excellent against Boro, he swept really well and took up some great positions. He came for a couple of crosses late on when we were under the cosh and made a great save midway through the second half, which was a real turning point. A clean sheet in the Championship is something to be admired and we’ve had a couple in recent weeks, we’re really pleased.”

Warne on keeping successive clean sheets away from home in the Sky Bet Championship…

“We do a lot of work with the back five/three on distances and lines, showing them videos of where the can improve. Fundamentally though, its all about character, the lads put their bodies on the line and threw themselves in front of shots.

“You’re never going to play a game where the opposition don’t create openings, but we’re pleased with how they stood up to it. I think Woody (Richard Wood) was excellent and marshalled the defence really well, he’s another on a good run of form.

“They are in a good place at the moment, but I’m not naive enough to suggest that Boro didn’t have chances to score, because they did. The job is to protect the ‘keeper as well as they can and in recent weeks they’ve certainly tired.”

Warne on potential movement in the January transfer window…

“I think two will be on their way out, one permanently and one on loan. I think that will take us to around 24 players in the squad. I’m hopeful of getting possibly one more in, we earmarked a midfielder or a centre-forward.

“We have five midfielders for four positions and I think we could do with another pair of legs in their because they put so much effort into games, so to think they can play 90 minutes every game for the next three months is optimistic, so I think we need an extra body to help them out.”

Warne on team news…

“There are no injuries or concerns from the game against Middlesbrough. Dan Barlaser is self-isolating, so he won’t be available for the game this weekend.

“Kieran Sadlier is doing okay, he still gets a little bit of pain in his ankle, he’ll train on the grass today.”

Warne on an injury setback for Chieo Ogbene…

“I’m afraid it is bad news on Chieo, his knee blew up this week, he’s seen the surgeon and it looks like he’s back with the specialist today. This means he’s under review and we'll have more clarity in the next week or so on the extent of the setback, but he will be out for longer than originally expected which is a massive blow.

“It is a massive blow for the squad, as well as the poor kid. He’s been through a lot of rehab for his injury and he’s pretty heartbroken at the moment.

“We thought he was going to be back by the end of January, but it unfortunately isn’t good news, as ever though, he has our full support and love.”

Warne on Swansea City…

“Steve Cooper has done really well there. They’ve just signed Conor Hourihane who is a Premier League player, so that is an amazing addition. They have Andrew Ayew and Jamal Lowe up top who are two of the better strikers in this league.

“They have a set style and recruit managers and coaches that suit that style, they have a real tradition of playing expansive football and are difficult to play against. He’s (Steve Cooper) a really likeable bloke and I think he’s done really well. I don’t think anyone would have expected them to be in the top two, so for them to be in that position is testament to what they are doing at that club.

“We’ve competed really well against good teams at home, we have to be at our best to come away with a good result. That is something we’re going to try and do and something we believe we can do.”

Rotherham Unted v Swansea City - Millers in good shape to get out of trouble

Source: Yorkshire Post

A change in formation has been the key behind Rotherham United’s recent good run, believes manager Paul Warne.

The Millers have picked up 10 points from their last six games to give themselves more than a puncher’s chance of staying in the Championship.

Rotherham currently occupy a place in the bottom three but have two games in hand over the sides immediately above them.

Such is the congested nature of the table, winning just one of those fixtures could move Warne’s side up three places.

The Millers chief has switched to a 3-5-2 formation during the last six fixtures, an approach which he feels best utilises the squad he has at his disposal.

Rotherham are preparing to welcome high-flying Swansea City, who are one of only five teams to have picked up more points than the Millers during their last six games, to South Yorkshire this afternoon.

“We have changed our shape to play with three centre-halves. We are still conceding goals so we haven’t got the magic answer to everything,” said Warne.

“With three centre-halves it allows our wing-backs to get further up the pitch, at the time we didn’t have many fit wingers so we had to find a different way to play.

“I have been saying for years that I have wanted to play with three at the back, the coaches always joke every pre-season that this will be the year we do it.

“It has sort of been forced on us a little bit this season and since we have played three at the back our performances have been excellent.

“We obviously haven’t won every game, nor would you expect us to, but I think we have tweaked that which has allowed all of our best players to play.

“It is the best system to allow us to play our 11 best players. I think as well it has coincided with certain players coming into good form and getting back up to match fitness at the same time.”

Warne has been using four central midfielders during recent games, something which has led to him looking to strengthen in that area. He won’t rush into any signings and admits that if someone is recruited, they won’t get put straight into the starting 11.

“It is difficult for us to sign better midfielders than what we have got because they are the best that are affordable to us,” he continued.

“If you are playing with a 4-4-2 or a 4-4-1-1, you can get by with five centre midfielders comfortably but when four are playing and you have got five, then that is a problem.

“That is a mammoth task so I think it is common sense to sign another one but that doesn’t mean that I am able to.

“Another midfield option would help us.”

Swansea won 1-0 when the sides last met in December and their recent form has put them second in the table.

Warne is wary of the threat posed by Andre Ayew and Jamal Lowe up front, with the pair scoring 17 goals between them this term.

They are City’s most potent threat, with their next best goalscorer, Matt Grimes, claiming three goals this season.

The Millers manager also believes the recent addition of Irish international Conor Hourihane makes the Welsh outfit a danger from set-pieces.

He added: “The best teams ask the most questions and we have got to come up with as many answers as we can.

“At the same time we have to pose them questions they might not have the answers for.

“I know we have a goal threat, we have scored six goals in two games so they are going to have to withstand pressure off us.

“They have got amazing talent, having Conor Hourihane in midfield is some signing. He has probably got the best left foot in the league, so that is a threat at set-pieces.

“And with Lowe and Ayew up top, they have got legs for fun. They are a really good team, hence why they are second.”

STEVE COOPER | WE WILL BE READY TO FIGHT

Source: Swansea Official Site

Steve Cooper says Swansea City will be ready for a battle when they face Rotherham United at the AESSEAL New York Stadium this afternoon.

Having earned a hard-fought draw against Brentford in midweek, the Swans have made the long journey to South Yorkshire to take on the Millers.

The visitors remain unbeaten in 2021, and on one of the best runs of form in the Championship having extended their sequence without defeat to eight games.

They take on a Rotherham side who sit in the relegation zone, but who have games in hand on the teams above them and are in decent form.

They have won three and drawn one of their last six in the second tier, and claimed an emphatic 3-0 win at Middlesbrough in midweek.

With Swansea having had to fight back from a man down and a goal down in midweek, the short turnaround and travelling makes for a challenging schedule.

But head coach Cooper has no doubt his players will be up for the fight in what he expects to be a tough contest.

“It’s a completely different challenge for us, and they are doing well and have had a really good result against Middlesbrough in midweek,” he said.

“So, it will be a tough game, but that is no surprise in this league. It’s a quick turnaround, we have played Wednesday and Rotherham is obviously not just around the corner from Swansea.

“But we will get on with that and get ready, there’s no doubt it’s right to call it a tough game. We have to be ready for it.

“I have a massive respect for them and how they go about their work.

“But, as I say, we have to focus on ourselves. There will be a cause at stake for every side in every game that is remaining this season.

“We have to make sure we are ready to fight for ours.”

If we really want top 2, we need to put the game the other night behind us. Start on the front foot and put a few goals in.

Coopers mantra of " we go into every game to win " needs to be backed up from now and back his own players ability to compete.

The Swans are in South Yorkshire this Saturday afternoon as they take on a Rotherham side still in the relegation placed but no doubt boosted by an impressive midweek win against Middlesbrough. After scraping ourselves a draw in midweek against Brentford, we now have the chance to go through January unbeaten and protect our 2nd place position ahead of next week’s massive Friday night game at the Liberty against Norwich.
