big buggers routinely fly over ferry and baglan mountainns dar seen from my childrens house - never know what they are - hawks, buzzard, kites?

Most likely buzzards or red kite, especially if they are gliding high up. Red kite have a v-shaped tale.

If it wanted to be fed, chances are it was a captured bird that had escaped anyway. A truly wild bird would never expect anyone to feed them, would they?
 
Up until 2 years ago, the only Cattle Egret I'd ever seen in the UK was at a local nature reserve and that was so far away I had to take someone else's word for it. Fast forward to yesterday afternoon, I was walking back across a field towards my house and saw a flock of 30-40 of them actually flying over my house!
