SWANSEA CITY SIGN WALES INTERNATIONAL KIERON FREEMAN

Source: Swansea Official Site

Swansea City have completed the signing of Wales international Kieron Freeman from Swindon Town for an undisclosed fee, subject to international clearance.

The 28-year-old defender has signed a contract until the end of the season, while Jordon Garrick has joined Swindon on loan until the end of the 2020-21 campaign, subject to EFL approval.

Freeman, who has one cap for Wales, came through the youth ranks at Nottingham Forest, making his senior debut in August 2011.

The defender spent three years with Midlands rivals Derby County between 2012 and 2015 before moving to Sheffield United in January 2015.

He went on to make over 100 appearances for the Blades, helping them win promotion from League One in 2017 before featuring 23 times as Chris Wilder’s men reached the Premier League in 2019.

Freeman’s solitary cap for Wales came in a friendly defeat against Albania in November 2018.

PAUL ARRIOLA ON HIS MOVE TO SWANSEA CITY

"It has been a crazy 24 hours but extremely exciting, I am excited to get this loan deal over the line and cannot wait to get over there, start training and hopefully playing soon.

"I had spoken to Steve Cooper a couple of weeks back and been with the national team for three weeks with Jordan Morris and we were both on the same page that we had the possibility to go and obviously he was able to go before me.

"It was just a waiting game and being with the national team kept my mind busy and today being deadline day thankfully everything was able to fall our way and I am now able to be in a fortunate position to go to Europe and test myself over there which I am really excited about.

"I am really good friends on and off the pitch with Jordan (Morris) and I think it will help both of us to be together over there and we are both really thriving in the system.

"It is great to be part of a club that is fighting for promotion which is extremely special. I need to get over there and get used to the culture and the country and give them everything that I have, this is the type of guy that I am and I will try and fit into any position to help the team."

I'm chuffed we've held on to some excellent players, as well as adding to the squad - some really good back-ups who will challenge established 1st team players. Brilliant business Mr Cooper and all at SCFC. Onwards and upwards!

Well done to all the staff who have played a part in getting all these deals over the line. We've had so much disappointment in previous transfer windows, it makes a nice change to feel we have strengthened the squad when we're in an auto position and can push on for the finishing line. Let's do this, starting on Friday. ⚽⚽⚽ - ⚽👌

I still think we need a natural striker. A proper no.9.

The length of contract given to Whittaker is interesting.
I doubt anyone had heard of him before but to give him a 4.5 year contract someone must be expecting big things for him.

From what I've read it looks like he'll be a bit part / back up player in the senior team this season and then, depending on where we are and how he progresses, developed between the academy, loans out for experience and senioe squad.
That appears to be a system we have had success with and IMO better preparation for senior team football.
On the other hand he may be good enough to command a first team place from day 1 ... or 2.

Cooper will know him from his (Cooper) time with the England kids, although Whittaker was one year behind Cooper’s group.

Mike Marsh was part of the England coaching team at his age group.

I can see a sense of logic in this. Good young talent probably not likely to break the bank but if he comes through and plays well and attracts interest then we can look for a much higher fee than say if he was on a two year contract

Let’s hope the new acquisitions will boost the squad and give them the strength in depth to push on and bag an auto spot. In addition to being a boost for the club, it would hopefully boost the local economy and hopefully see resolution to the Trust shares issue.
